.... to statins!

I had a blood pressure follow up appointment today, which went swimmingly. "Wow, you've lost 40 lbs in 6 months, keep up the good work!" Down from 3 bp meds to 1, hoping to at least reduce that one in the coming months.

I had a lipid profile after the appointment, and these were the results:

Total cholesterol: 269
LDL: 174
HDL: 71 (woot woot!)
Triglycerides: 122

I thought, okay, they won't think the LDL number is ideal, but the rest is awesome. I get a call from the nurse, "So, while your HDL is fantastic, your LDL has gone up (from 161). Would you be open to starting a statin?" NOPE!

The "other option" was to "tweak my diet & exercise", although that was very vague, and recheck. I went with option 2. I was kind of surprised they even brought up statins.

Anyway, thanks all! I probably wouldn't have stood up for no medication without all of the helpful information & support in this forum.

    Congrats!

If they decide to push statins in the future, you could always ask for an LDL break down first. I bet your pattern A LDL is going up and pattern B LDL is going down. Good things. :)

And congrats on the weight loss and reduction of BP meds. That's fantastic!

    Thanks everyone!

And @nvmomketo - that would have been my next question for the nurse if they pushed harder  . Luckily, she said the doc was equally open to either medication or rechecking down the road.

This is just one of many articles you can read on the topic. Before I even remotely entertained taking any kind of medication for cholesterol, I would insist on getting one or both of the tests mentioned in here.

Even then, given the fact all of the studies I seem to be able to find show only the triglycerides have any real link to health problems. Your triglycerides are below 150, so they are fine.
