Keto Day Four

Hey,
This diet is going well for me so far. Day two and three were really REALLY rough though , huge headaches and nausea. This morning though (day 4) woke with no headache.
I'm looking for people to friend me so they can look at my diary and offer advice plus support .
I will obviously do the same in return .
Thanks in advance people :)

Feel free to add me. The launch pad has a lot of good advice for when you are starting out to get you past the rough parts. Extra sodium and water will help quite a bit with the headaches. Good luck!

Yup! Keto flu is real. I had a constant headache for the first three days. It was so weird. I've done low carb before but never had such an extreme headache. Day four, woke up feeling fine. :) Just wait it out. Feel free to add me!

Yep. Sodium. Most keto'ers need 3000-5000+ mg of sodium per day, especially at first. That's the equivalent of about 2 teaspoons of salt per day. Add it to water, drink salty broth, eat salt tablets, and salt your food liberally.

You may also want to consider some potassium and magnesium (citrate) supplements. As sodium levels drop, K and Mg soon follow.

And Tylenol until the salt works it's magic. ;)

I'm glad things are going better for you today. I echo what the others have said: electrolytes for the headaches and nausea. It works wonders for me!

I've suffered from chronic headaches since I was a teenager! Have been on every medication available (including daily Dilaudid. Transition to this woe 19 months ago helped decrease the frequency of the headaches, and need for medicating n! If I have a headache now I drink some pickle and that usually knocks it right out!

Also, I'm not one of the lucky ones who are able to transition to not having too supplement electrolytes, but many can. Hopefully you're one who can!

Welcome to the group too! I'm always open to new friends, but I don't log my food anymore. I did at first but once I'd learned it I didn't feel the need anymore. I've continued to lose to my goal weight over the non logging time! But, I feel that logging is a vital part of the process to help learn about what we choose to put in our mouths!

Best of luck to you! This woe is life changing!!

Does everyone go through a keto flu? I slowly transitioned to lowering my carbs and now hitting 20-30 net carbs for the past 3 days and no real symptoms like other have reported.

Can it be I am not 'In' ketosis?

Due to being gluten intolerant and not a big fan of most of the GF products I have not had a lot of carbs for the two years before I went LCHF a couple of months back. I never suffered the keto flu, but I think that is down to the fact I went from low carb to much lower carbs, and ensured I added more salt to my diet. I never went through the carb withdrawals stage. That is my theory anyways.

Keto flu is actually an electrolyte imbalance. It isn't needed, or wanted. ;) If you transition slowly, and increase electrolytes, that will help ensure you don't hit it. And some never exeperience it at all even without increasing sodium.

I had a hard time believing I needed 3-5 grams of sodium per day so I never added it in. by my second or third week LCHF, I was hurting. I added salt to my water (a teaspoon) and was better in hours. LOL

I didn't but I also already knew about replacing sodium so I figured it was because my electrolytes never got low.

Thank you so much for the tips. I thought I was really doing something wrong. My trainer told me about the "flu" and he said I will need more salt so I salted some of my food a little more. I guess a good thing. Thank you

Thank you:) my trainer told me about the salt issue and I get I somehow compensated while going lower carb therefore never hit an imbalance of electrolytes to experience the flu.

I am getting a monitor to test blood in a couple of weeks. My trainer got one and after 6 weeks of strict ketogenic eating he is barely in the range. Crazy

@jtkatch You'll have to consider sharing your experience with other newbies when the topic comes up again. It's always good to hear stories about how to start LCHF right. :)

Yes for sure. It would be my pleasure. It's tough developing new recipes and all and then really trying to stay around the 20-30 net carbs being vegan ...looking forward to getting my monitor to get some physical feedback ;)
