Losing weight freaks me out!

First off thank you for accepting me into the group!

I don't know why but through out my life any time I lost weight, especially if the weight came off easily I panic. Like I'm doing something that I shouldn't? Like It's something that could hurt my body I guess? I'm back on the wagon again after almost 9 months of struggling to get back at it. Last time I lost 14 pounds in 9 days without trying. I was getting around 1,500 calories a day and my carbs were always between 15-30 g each day. I finally managed to pull out of it intending only to slow down a bit but then I found myself completely back in my old habits.

Now I have been back at it for about a month. My plan was to keep my carbs between 100-125 g per day. I have not seen the rapid weight loss that I saw previously but I do feel a sense of panic when I realize I almost can't get 100 g of carbs a day. And I actually have eaten some "PMS candy". My carbs are always still well below 100 g. So yesterday my weight was at 165 lbs. Today I got up and weighed in at 163 lbs. I instantly felt the old familiar fat loss fear. While I know this has got to be at least partially water weight it still felt like a jolt to me. Instead of trying to put on the brakes I figure maybe I would check here for help, reassurance, others who feel this way when the weight seems to fall off.

I also find I have to just eat because I should, not because I am really even hungry. I do a pretty good job of keeping my calories up for a person with no appetite. Don't get me wrong though, I totally appreciate the small or no appetite part. I had a terrible hunger and binging issue before low carb. Now at least when I am truly hungry I definitely feel that it is hunger and not just "puppet eating". I always felt like a puppet on a string shoving food in my face.

So what say you low carbers? Advice, wisdom, similar experiences? Thank you!

I am new to lowering carbs so I probably can't offer advice that would mean anything to you. I do eat more than you do carb wise.

I just wanted to let you know that in the small shift I have made so far, my appetite has decreased quite a lot. My struggle is fats. It's been beat into my had for years that they are bad and I struggle with breaking that. Everything I have is "non-fat" this and that.

The appetite decrease appears to be normal? From my understanding of what I read. But I am sure someone with way more knowledge will appear to alleviate your fears. I am hoping you physically feel fine?

And welcome! These are a nice NICE bunch of people :)
  • Yes, I feel fine! The appetite loss really freaked me out initially because I had been a face stuffing maniac for several years after I quit smoking. I need to get comfortable with seeing the weight come off. That is where my problem seems to be. I get my ball rolling and then stop because for what ever reason it scares me when the weight drops too easily. I know this is just a mental thing. But I would love to get past it.

Weight doesn't drop easily. In the beginning of any change in your way of eating you will lose water weight and inflammation, sometimes in big chunks. If you stick with it longer you'll find that it doesn't work like that forever and you'll have many stretches of no weight loss or gain, again from inflammation and fluid changes. Try to focus yourself on fueling your body with healthy nourishing foods and not worry about the scale

Just browse through this group and you'll see tons of posts from many of us asking how to break a stall and why isn't this working anymore and similar stuff.
The weight loss slows and often stops for long periods of time without any apparent explanation.
Feed your body the right foods and don't stress the details and your body will guide you into better health weather you like it or not.
You just have to be consistent and patient and realize that your body is smarter than you.

I'm in this boat right now. my weight hasn't moved in almost two months even though I added exercise and my macros are the same. But my HEALTH is doing way better, I feel better with more energy and clothes fitting better. The number on the scale doesn't matter that much anymore to me. I agree with @Sunny_Bunny_ your body will guide you and that's what I love about this WOE , we learn to heart our body
  • I have been misunderstood. I am NOT at a stall. I understand the temporary aspect of the weight loss and all that goes into that, I am just trying to get comfortable with this process. The weight is coming off. And it is not all water as was suggested although I also know it is not all fat. It is a combination. Thank you all for your help here. I appreciate all the responses!

And why are you so scared of losing weight? Isn't that why you use this app and follow a diet? Or are you trying to put weight on, some here are. I am not one of those lucky folks :) You might want to figure out why it would scare you to lose. If you are not hungry, then eat only to your BMR level and don't eat any more. No need to stuff yourself, especially if you don't want to lose faster.

Personally, I am happy with any drop, tells me that ultimately I will get where I am headed.

    Good luck with your Journey.

Weight loss doesn't always happen the way we expect it to. I have a lot of weight to lose and I lost 50% of my total loss thus far in the first 3 months, it then slowed for the next three months to a reasonable pace, it then came to what felt like a grinding halt in comparison for the following 3 months. Then, all of a sudden, I've lost nearly as much as I lost in the last three months in just one week. The way I see it, my body found a weight it wanted to hang out at for a while, it didn't want to budge and now it's finally given in.

All we can do is fuel our body in the best way possible for our own specific situation and be patient, consistent and kind to ourselves. The weight part will follow suit in a rollercoaster fashion.

Thanks! You know, I can come up with no good reason why it scares me. It's so strange. I am making an effort at getting comfortable with it. I usually turn and go back but I really want to stick it out this time.

You're not alone in panicking over weight loss. While I've not dealt with this problem myself, I understand that it's fairly common. Sometimes weight can serve as an insulator of sorts keeping us from making changes we need to or want to make. Change can be hard even when it's a positive change like weight loss. Perhaps you can do some self-reflection on what it is about weight loss that is causing the panic feeling. At the same time, you can reflect on why you want to lose the weight and what benefits you anticipate will come from weight loss. If you're unsure, looking at others' posts in this forum about the benefits that they have received could help you to identify benefits that you may expect to come from your weight loss efforts. Focusing on benefits and tracking your progress toward achieving them may help to reduce or eliminate your feelings of panic. Best wishes for success in working through this challenge. You can do it and there are many people on this forum ready to support you.

No you haven't been misunderstood. The comparison to stalling is that people freak out and panic when it happens similarly to you panicking when you are losing quickly. The point is neither mean anything because the scale is one measure of what is going on in your body and can fluctuate greatly from day to day hour to hour minute to minute, therefore stressing over what it shows in the short term does no one any good.

No, I realize you're not saying you're at a stall. I'm saying that you will be soon enough. The body always as control over weight loss. Once it's lost a bit (different amounts for all of us), it will put on the breaks even if you want it to continue.
I'm saying there's nothing to be concerned about if you're feeding it real food that is actually healthy, it will take the reins and lead you to better health. Weight loss or even gain isn't a good indicator of finding better health or not. The body will reduce fat, keep fat or add fat as it sees fit and as long as you aren't forcing unhealthy behaviors such as going hungry or over exercising trying to force weight loss, then you have nothing to worry about.
I'm saying... HAVE FAITH THAT YOUR BODY KNOWS WHAT IT NEEDS. Eating a low carb diet will help you find better health and if that means weight loss, then so be it.

Lord knows it won't come to a stall today. Every time I try to eat either my husband or kids do something to cause me to have to delay eating. I have had a cup of yogurt and now I'm really getting cranky. It would be nice if I could just get them all to leave the house for an hour so I can just eat with out all the household drama and interruptions. Just a vent.

    Yeah. I feel you there.
I am so hangry by the time I fix and serve food to everyone...And then as soon as I sit down, it's "Mama, mama! I need this or that. Or some dire thing has happened!!!" Ugh.

Right?! Dare I say eating in the middle of the night when the house is asleep may be my only hope! LOL!
