Going for it!

Hi guys - These passed couple of weeks I have been reading ALL the stickies in here. Watched some of the videos, etc etc. I was really on the fence about trying Keto but I'm going for it! My hangups are; I can't manage enough protein and I still have "Fats are bad" beat into my brain. But if I can turn myself around on those things, in the end, I think it's a way of eating I can do forever. I was worried about bread because I do love me some bread! But there are enough alternatives to that I don't think I'll miss it much.
Hubby got me a couple small protein drinks and today I started! I actually made my protein goal! YAHOOO ... missed my fats by 22 and overshot my carbs by 20 for a total of 40. I miscalculated a few things. My math skills are horrific. But all in all I think I did pretty good. Obviously have to work on it a bit more and learn to fit this new style into my life but I think it will be fun and good for me!
Thanks for all the stickies, videos and threads with info!

Awesome, welcome!
Just curious, are you subtracting your fiber from your total carb count? If you're following Keto, count net carbs like so:
1 Avocado -> 13g carbs, 10g of fiber = 3 net carbs
If not, then maybe you were spot on today! Either way, congrats on lowering your carbs today
Edit: My google chrome addon says that you are at 26g net carbs, that's not too bad!1 -
Even getting down to 40 carbs on day one is pretty good given how many foods out there are advertised as low carb but really aren't or foods you don't think of as having carbs but really do (i.e. many sausages, hot dogs, bologna and other processed meats). It takes time, experience and practice to get down to 20 without the need to do something extreme.
What works best for me is trying to map the entire day up front. Otherwise I end up where I am trying to figure out how I will be getting 0 at dinner because I have hit my goal for the day.
Trying to keep protein from getting too high is even harder for me than it is keeping my carbs down.
Good luck. Keep your goals associated with this change in the front of your mind (blood sugar control, weight loss, neurological issues, inflammation, etc.) If you lose sight of your goals, you will lose your motivation.1 -
Well YAY for that! Because I didn't do net, I counted all of it. I wasn't sure if net was really a *thing* ... glad to know there's some leeway there with fiber. That's helpful. Thanks for letting me know!2

Welcome! I had a minor freak-out this weekend of "Are all these fats really OK?? OMG I'm killing myself!!!" And then I talked myself down. It takes work to counteract a lifetime of societal misinformation.1

cstehansen - Thanks for that! I hadn't thought of doing the entire day ahead of time. I mean I pre-plan but never thought about getting the carbs in line BEFORE it goes in my mouth. Makes total sense! Thank you1

I'm a nurse...have been for over 2 decades now. So for 20 years I've preached low cal, low fat, CICO...then in April I decided to go Keto. It was really hard to get on board with it at first, and I waited almost a month before I decided to give it a try. What keeps me going is how much better I feel, the weight I've lost, the lack of hunger most of the time and all of the wonderful lab results people post here. I am fully a LCHF advocate. It's hard, I know...but it's right for me and so many others.3

Thanks RowdysLady .. that helps so much. We've been so smacked in the face over and over since the what ... 80's? About some of this stuff that it is a very scary step to make for me. But the more I read, the more it just makes sense. I am glad to hear from health professionals that they see the benefits too.
Today was GOOD! I made my protein goal without the aid of a drink. Even went a little bit over! Still didn't reach my fat but it's getting better.
Now if I am understanding this correctly, my total carbs for the day was 27. My fiber from that was 10. So I subtract the fiber from my total carbs and get 17 net carbs? If that's correct I am UNDER! *almost has a party but waits for confirmation*5 -
Yes, that is correct-a-mundo!!!!
Welcome!!!

Start the party! Correct!2

YAHOOO !! Thanks guys!1

Just a note re: net carbs - in the UK & most of Europe fiber is already subtracted so if you happen to look up an item (even a vegetable) from a uk store it will already show net carbs.
Really just saying this in case any new uk Keto dieters read the thread.
Welcome to the wagon! It's a great place to be!3 -

You don't have to reach the fat... it's more a matter of get enough at each meal to hold you over til the next meal. If you get hungry between meals (real hunger, not boredom or craving) then you didn't eat a good meal the time before. Usually it's either too low fat or too high carb. So you get hungry before you should.
If you are in control of hunger all day and got enough protein and didn't go over carbs and have fat left... there's absolutely no reason to eat it. If you're not hungry you don't need it. Let your body use some from storage instead.3 -

Yep! That's a big one. After decades of doctors and nutritionists browbeating me about calories, it's hard for me to ignore them too (I tend to obsess). It helped me to differentiate in my mind between "body fat" and "dietary fat".
Have you watched the Fathead video? It's excellent. Only place I've found it anymore free online is here:
