Down but not out

Yesterday I finally saw the sports MD about my hip/groin pain. X-rays ruled out anything wrong with the joint itself - all looks perfect. The MD felt around my groin and inguinal canal as I coughed - but nothing too obvious that would indicate a hernia. He had me try to squeeze my knees together as he pressed back with his arms. Boy that hurt! Pain seems more concentrated in the upper adductor muscles and where they attach in the groin. I'm in more pain now than before my appointment, due to that squeeze test. Hopefully it's just a groin strain and not a hernia. He told me to stop running until he sees me again in two weeks for a follow-up. Biking is OK but I will have to lay off lunges, squats, or anything like that. I had just completed week 1 of my half-marathon training and just did a 8-mile run at 8:51 pace on Sunday. I ran without pain but it was a bit sore after. But nothing like last month when it hurt just to put my pants on.

On the bright side my wife saw the MD at the same time and was cleared to run again. She's been stir crazy for the past 3 weeks as her sprained ankle was healing. Then she had to deal with a shoulder injury last week after crashing her bike.

So here's what I have learned:
- at the first sign of any pain, no matter how minor, give yourself some rest first and slow down the running for a while
- if the pain isn't going away, see a MD soon!
- icing your groin is not fun
- be careful biking on wet boardwalks (heck, that goes for running too)
- if you & your spouse both run, and one is injured, don't talk about running all the time
- ice cream may not cure you but it sure makes you feel better
- beer may not cure you but it sure makes you feel better (just not right after ice cream - ugh!)

Oh, man, Tim. I saw on your status that you'd be out for awhile. That sucks. However, it doesn't sound as bad as it could be. Don't over do it when you re-start your marathon training either.

    Hugs!

Thanks - and I will definitely need to revise the target paces in my training plan. If I move the 16-week plan back 3 weeks from now then that lines up perfectly for my Thanksgiving race. But I also have that Allstate HM in early October. The training plan has me doing a 13-mile run that day so I will treat the race as a training run and run at the target training pace (not a full-on race pace). I figure moving the plan 3 weeks allows 2 weeks of rest and one week of slow buildup.

What I'm really worried about is the 9.9 mile trail race at Red Top Mountain on 8/3. My wife & I already paid for it and we'll go but I doubt either one of us will be moving fast. I may ask to switch to the 3.1 mile race. Signing up for all these races seemed like a great idea back when we were both feeling great and injury-free!

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with constant injuries. I see more doctors now than ever before. I'm not sure why health insurance co's think we are cheaper to insure when we are healthier. My first triathlon is in two days, and I'm not going to be in it. I'm hoping I can get to one before the season is over mid-Sept. I'll be pouting all weekend.

Yep - my wife has had two visits to urgent care & the sports MD in the past month and I just saw the sports MD again last week. That gets expensive! My wife gets the acute injuries and I get the chronic injuries. I just bought a Groupon deal for a chiro visit & massage so maybe they can tell me why I get all these issues on my right side.

Sorry to hear about your triathlon. Hope you recover soon!

I'll be pouting with you in spirit. It totally sucks to miss a race because of illness or injury.

Thanks for commiserting with me. I had a good pout in spin class this morning. The one I shouldn't have been in if I had been doing my triathlon tomorrow.

I have my splint off today to see how I do (and so I can wash it after class this morning). It's still a bit sore, though, so I know it's not healed yet.

I pick up the bike I'm borrowing on Tuesday. It might be another week or two before I can ride it, but I need to get out on the road soon.

Timeasterday, it sounds like you two need a "frequent flyer" rewards card from the sports med doctor's office.
