Fitbit Hiking Hint

I did a 40 mile, 3+ day trip last week and found tracking where I was using my step count very helpful once I used a measure of 2500-2600 a mile instead of my normal 2200. Landmarks seemed to fall pretty much where I expected them to. Bad news is that I broke my 500+ day MFP streak on the trip because of battery issues with my phone.

Any other Fitbit hints for hiking and backpacking?

You might try the Fitbit group for this question. My suggestion is that you can change your stride in your Fitbit profile if you know what it is. I've done treadmill walking and running both for specific distances and tracked the number of steps during that time to calculate stride lengths.

Yesterday, Fitbit showed 15.79 miles and most of that was about 6 hrs. of hiking as I didn't move much aside from that. One of our group members used a GPS watch and had about 14.4 miles, so I don't think mine is too far off.

You could try a USB connectable battery pack for when the power runs out or a solar charger.

I had no service on an AT hike and was able to use this link to reset my streak.

Your stride while hiking is generally shorter due to the up and downhill sections.
