Eating elsewhere

I went quite a bit over my carb allowance today of 20g. We had family over for lunch, and then we had a dinner party to go to.
I felt I was making good decisions at the dinner party, as the choices were: Brown rice, mixed veggies (mostly starchy), pork and peanut sauce. I took only pork, sauce and minimal veggies. When I logged, I was way over and I instantly felt it. And then I felt it again in the bathroom. Ugh.
So I guess what I learned is that this keto life agrees with me, and even when a meal elsewhere appears to be fairly carb friendly, like hey, the host is gluten free too!, it really can sneak up on ya.
How do y'all approach these gatherings where there are limited options? I felt it would have been rude in this situation to take anything less than I did. It was kind of an awkward scenario, with only a few options and only a few people were present at a sit down kind of thing where I didn't really know anyone but my husband. Like in reality, I should have just eaten the pork with some salt and fatted up at home.

I tend to carry some MCT oil with me, and/or plan to eat or "fat up" before leaving home, regardless of how fat friendly I expect a meal to be. Nuts can be stashed in the purse, high % chocolate pieces. A cup of coffee can be drunk while others eat, but I think the biggest thing is that you end up having to be your own advocate.
Even if you don't know anyone else there, I'd still try to reach out to the host in advance if possible, or pull her aside upon arrival and explain that you have medically driven dietary restrictions, and that you don't want to be offensive, so you wanted to let her know that you're quite happy not to eat or to eat something else you brought, but for me, it is not worth getting sick to attempt to not offend a relative stranger who might be more inclined to help than you expect...0 -
In those situations, I tend to eat before I go. If it is a social situation, it is easier to get away with not eating much if you are talking. When not talking, it is easier to show interest in what someone else is saying if you aren't putting food in your mouth.1

I won't eat anything for the sake of not offending.
I just eat what I can. If there isn't enough meat available to the point that I feel like if I eat 2 or 3 times the meat of everyone else then I just eat what I can get away with without looking greedy.
The best thing is I know I won't be starving even if I can't eat a full meal. I might bring something to share that I can also eat but not always. I'm ok if I don't get to eat a lot.0
