The little star symbol you see next to each thread is for noting a bookmark. If you click on it it turns yellow, and then you'll get a notification (at the little bell symbol) when others post a comment there.
I mention these things because I figured them out only after hanging out here for months, leading me to think the bookmarks and notices might not be a completely obvious function.
