Carbs/sugar in fruit and milk

In addition to my carbs, I am being really mindful of the sugars I consume. I'm wondering if you all avoid the sugar in whole milk and fruit? I don't eat either regularly, but today I had a fruit salad and a latte at a holiday brunch and realized I exceeded my sugars for the day yet my carbs are still quite low. Should I stress?

Carbs are sugar. Fruit is very high in sugar, as is milk. I would definitely count it.

I have converted completely to unsweetened almond milk and unsweetened cashew milk from cow's milk. Nearly all carbs convert to sugar in your blood stream. If you are eating sugar, it is just hitting your blood stream faster and all at once instead of trickling in like it would if it were a complex carb.

As for fruit, it will be higher in fructose which doesn't drive up your blood sugar. It gets processed in your liver. However, fructose has been linked to fatty liver disease in children. I have not seen any research on adults, but I tend to stay away from most fruits. If you do eat fruit, the best would be the berries - blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries.

I avoid both. The first time I logged a latte and saw all the carbs it blew me away, I had no idea. I also don't currently eat fruit except for raspberries 2-3/month or so.

The carbs from the sugar in fruit or from bread or pasta or a box of candy for that matter, end up the same glucose in your blood. Whatever carb total you've chosen for yourself should include all the carbs you eat.

I occasionally have berries, a rare cappuccino with whole milk, and grapefruit but I keep it within my carb goal. I don't view them as any better or worse than any other source of sugar.

I do "if it fits your macros" within keto/LCHF macros. I don't have fruit or milk often, but occasionally, and generally a smaller serving if I do. I have heavy cream in my coffee and use unsweetened almond milk in smoothies.

I look at the whole carb package when I'm assessing my meals for the day, including sugars and fiber. When low carb for me used to mean 100 g per day, I did more of an IIFYM plan, but I used that as an excuse to eat foods that I'm really better off avoiding, so now that I'm down to 20-35 g day, I try to eat pretty clean (though I do eat bacon and cheese) and I get most of my carbs from veggies, the only exception is a couple of carb grams from dairy. Fruit (berries only) is a very rare treat for me, but I do have 2 Tbsps of whole milk each day, one tbsp in two cups of tea, I hate cream in my tea, that's reserved for my coffee only.

This is what I do too. I just have to be careful to spread my carbs out throughout the day due to prediabetes. I could technically eat a candy bar and stay under my carb level for the day (if I ate only protein and fat for the rest of the day) but the carb/sugar hit at one time would not be good for my health... or my cravings.

Overall I watch sugars too but carbs are my hard ceiling. If my carbs do not exceed 30g per day, my sugars are usually not much above 5g. If sugar becomes more than a third of my carbs, I know I am eating the "wrong" kinds of carbs for my health and readjust my eating.
