So apparently there is a "sugar detox" program out there that looks at first glance very similar to phase 1. I found this comment from WebMD interesting.
"Can you beat your sugar habit by quitting cold turkey? Some sugar detox plans urge you to avoid all sweets. That means all fruit, dairy, and refined grains. The idea is to purge your system of sugar. Diet changes like this are too drastic to keep up. Changes that you can do only for the short term mean you'll fall back to your old habits."
I haven't read the "sugar detox" book so I can't opine. BUT I do know this. SBD followed properly and fully *is* sustainable. Also drastic "rip the bandaid off" changes actually don't mean you'll fall back into your old habits. INFACT I have read article after article that going cold turkey is often the best way to change a habit. Providing that you dont inconsistently reward the bad habit.
so lets say you went through phase 1 and then during the 1st week of phase 2 you ate a hunk of chocolate. That is is inconsistent reward. Infact you are making it more difficult to break the habit again.
Whereas, if you follow the SBD 100% you will change your habit. Because you will go cold turkey on eating junk food.
Anyone that has sleep trained a co-sleeping child/baby knows that the Ferber and Weisbluth methods are cold turkey habit changers and they work like a charm.
I end this long diatribe with a link to a wiki article on extinction burst. THIS is what you are trying to do when you break yourself of craving sugar. You are trying to not only reduce blood sugar drops and the resulting sugar binge but you are also trying to get past the pain of extinction bursts. It takes about 60 days to change a habit but studies show the 1st 10 days are the worst.
