Everyone says it, but just how do you do it? How do you take the guidelines of the WW program and turn them into a lifestyle you can live every day...from now on? That is what we are here to explore. Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Newbie? Join in! Veteran? Join in! Your thoughts may be just what someone else needs to hear.

Today's topic: 2016 Wrap Up

In recent weeks we've discussed the challenges we are facing along with what we would do differently during this past year if we had a "time machine". As 2016 comes to a close, please take a moment to reflect and share what some of the positives that came out of this year.

2016 was the year of the eyes for me. I started off with compromised vision (which began in November 2014) that negatively affected my mood due to the frustration of trying to accomplish certain simple tasks. Cataract surgery in July restored my vision and greatly improved my outlook on life, so to speak. Since I had already maxed out my high deductible plan for the year, I went ahead and had the other eye done a couple weeks ago even though I could have waited a few more years. So glad I made that choice as I'm now able to be free of glasses for the first time since 6th grade.

Another positive this year was that I made a 83.9 mile dent in my bucket list item of hiking the entire ~1,110 miles of the Ice Age Trail by the time I turn 70 (15 years from now). Being very close to my personal goal weight allows me to spend long hours navigating the hilly terrain without getting totally exhausted.

Our brief warm up at the start of this week allowed me to get outdoors on my bike one more time so that I could get in another 24 miles of riding and break the 1,200 mile mark for 2016. I haven't ridden this much since 2005. Again, not having excess weight makes going up hills so much easier on the bike.

So while 2016 was challenging in many regards, there were certainly many positive things that did happen.

Happy New Year everyone! Looking forward to continuing to "live the lifestyle" with all of you in 2017!

Overall, 2016 was a great year for me. Sure, there were plenty of things that I could complain about, but when I really think about it, there wasn't anything that terrible.

From a WW perspective, I actually lost a bit of weight this year, and so am a little closer to my personal goal weight. I've maintained under my WW goal ever since I got there in 2009! I hope to get a little closer to my personal goal though.

I had a great year at my new job, and made slow but steady progress in a number of areas there. We're going to have our first trial of a new drug I've been working with for the pediatric cancer I study in the very near future. That's super-exciting.

My oldest went off to college, and my other two are doing well in their new schools.

Not a bad year at all!

Well, I made it through another year below my WW goal weight.

I pushed the envelope a bit on my hiking. I took the longest day hikes ever. My record for the year was a 29-mile day, and my greatest one-day climb was more than 5,000 feet. Not as many hikes as I'd have liked, but still got in more than 250 trail miles.

Our son moved back to town with his family, so we now get to spend lots of time with all of them. Grand children brighten up everything.

I had a very good WW year losing 36.8# That is more than double my 2015 total loss of -16#. I realized I can still lose "at my age" (68) and moved a lot more.
I started to track my swimming laps and watch me move up on the board kept at the pool.
I had arthroscopic knee surgery which may have slowed me down temporarily but will help in the long term.
I survived the transition from WW to MFP. Not quite the same but we seem to have a loyal group of GOAD.
I accepted the No Finish Line philosophy and realized if I just keep pushing forward that progress is progress, no matter how small. Comparing my weight month to month, rather than day to day or week to week gives me a better perspective.

Wishing you all a great New Year!

Gadgetwonderwoman you rock. Dave too of course. 2016 is mostly a year to forget including my visual probs.

Amazingly not only got in my 3000 mile biking standard but over 3700 mi. somehow. And weight has been remarkably stable and below goal.

From a weight loss perspective 2016 was good to me. In 2015 I went over my WW Lifetime free weight, in 2016 I lost all of it, got back to goal and am now 10 pounds below my WW Lifetime (free) "high" # for WI. And I am going for a new goal, which is about 7 pounds away.

The gain was related to job stress and some family stress (aging parents/loss of parent etc) that translated to less activity and more chocolate. I have worked my way out of the stress aspect on both fronts which has brought me back to more activity and balanced lifestyle. But still looking for non-cardio routine to tone muscles, that's the 2017 objective. Because 2017 is a milestone year, I am entering a new decade on my birthday. :)

In 2016 I lost my Mom and my pup Mya, those were not great times, but they also had no impact on eating, if anything I eat less when sad.

2017 looks promising right now, potential new job and potential improvement at current job so deciding to switch will be thought out more, versus reacting to "not liking" the job in it's current state.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

It was not a good year for me over all. I started strong walking, hiking, but my back gave out. Multiple procedures and Drs I am retired and finally on a path forward. Positives are that I have turned the corner, am learning now to take care of my back and strengthen it. I am just starting to rebuild toward an active healthy life and get the weight off. So my positive for 2016 are I am facing forward, actively learning a new way to be active, turned the corner emotionally and am looking forward to a different post next year!

For me, the biggest thing is that I've gotten back on the path. While I am doing MFP instead of WW, I have been taking the steps of making myself part of the GOAD community again, I've been tracking, and I've exercised within my doctor's limits for me. I'm not perfect at any of these things, but I'm re-discovering the part of Gavin that is resilient and persists despite challenges and set-backs.

@podkey - thank you for the kind words. I'm not the least bit surprised that you still surpassed your baseline mileage. You are a good example of how lots of little bike commuting trips (plus some big ones) can really add up over the course of the year.

2016 weight wise was not such a great year for me. In fact I would say it's my worst since I started my WW journey back in 2010. That being said it wasn't disastrous. Net gain for he year is + 6.7 lbs started at 308.2 and wound up at 314.9. However I hit a low in 2016 of 292.6 back on July 8th so really my is gain was 22.3 lbs for the year. At least heading into the new year I feel like I have my head in the right place. So come on 2017 I' ready.

Health wise overall at my weight and age it has been a stable year just always dreaded my visit with my Cardiologists. He wants me to get this weight off asap. DW had a good healthy year till September and had Cataract Surgery on both eyes and it din't turn out well. I won't go into the details but we're headed for two more procedures in January and hopefully she will be able to see better after those procedures.

2016 started out with a bang business wise and it was so busy I couldn't catch myself coming or going. I'm thankful for that because I'm in Real Estate and it has been a roller coaster ride for the past few years.

I'm thankful for this board and what it means to me. I appreciate all those who post and hang in there it really means a lot to me to be able to read the positives and the negatives. We all have a negative period with our weight sometime or another. I feel 2017 will be a great year and I wish that for all on this board as well.

Happy New Year! and a safe and prosperous 2017 to all.

Lots of positives here. On weight and fitness, I'm running, I'm maintaining, I'm generally pleased with where I am.

It's actually very nice to think about things in terms of what's going right. I'm at the office today after being off work the balance of the week. We traveled to San Diego for the Holiday Bowl, and I'm just so greatly appreciative of the good times and the opportunity to enjoy those days with my wife and kids. Life isn't perfect, but not everything is a problem to be solved (at least not every minute of every day!).

Best wishes to you all for a safe and festive holiday weekend and a very happy new year!

Might sound silly, I think it's supposed to actually- Pickleball. I've found a way to get a workout better than my workouts without working out. One day it struck me, here I was with about 30 people I hadn't known a month ago. My age, 66, likely about median age for the group, about even split men & women, and we were getting together to play. And it was great exercise.

Pickleball pretty much checks all the boxes for recreation in retirement. Moving around, socializing, and concentrating. It's a great way to meet new people. Some folks are in it to compete, but most of us are just there to play. Fun.

@imastar2 - so sorry to read of the not good outcomes for your wife's cataract surgeries. Prayers that the next round of procedures help fix her vision.

For all who have struggled in '16, I wish you good turnaround in 2017! I have definitely experienced the challenge of weight loss when the chips are down. For me, that can be very tough so I can relate.

I was able to maintain my weight loss throughout 2016. In the past, I've only been able to increase it B) so this is definitely a plus. Along with that, I've thoroughly enjoyed the benefits associated with weighing less. My personal accomplishment I'm proud of is having licensed some of my pictures for commercial use. Not a big deal; not quitting my day job but still a little boost. I have been lucky to be in the right place at the right time on a few occasions this year; that's helped to feed my soul.
