Hi. After 65 years, I finally learned how to swim and can do freestyle and backstroke. I don't have much endurance though and have to stop each length to rest. Any advice about how to best build endurance?

So a couple thoughts come to mind. If you can make it 3-4 times a week for 20-30 minutes each day, it is better than one hour long session once a week for improving endurance.

Also, endurance comes with efficiency and improving your stroke technique will help you be able to go farther. There are some great videos on breathing, body position and arm position both beneath the surface and above the water for freestyle on youtube. For backstroke, while you don't have to be as concerned with breathing, focusing on form will help there as well.

    Hope that helps!

Just think "one more lap. "
Each week try to add one more lap.
When you feel like can't do any more. Rest 30 to 60 seconds and do just "one more lap."
