I know a few of us make this (if you don't you should). But I haven't been making it as I really can't be bothered with all the effort and the mess of slicing up a cabbage (lazy I know, but when I get home from work it's all too hard )
And then, something life changing happened. I realised that I can buy a bag of coleslaw mix. Yes it has a bit of carrot in it, but not much. And the work is already done. And there's no mess.
Am I the only one who didn't realise this?

Some of the recipes even call for using the coleslaw mix, sans dressing, so I realize that before, but personally, I still prefer shredding my own cabbage for flavor. I don't mind the carrots, but it is more cost effective for me on a head of cabbage.
Also , "broccoli slaw" works well in this dish/recipe, too.0 -
No. I know slaw can be found already prepped in bags but it is good you pointed it out for those who don't know. I choose to use heads of cabbage and enjoy the monotony of cutting those thin strips of cabbage. I find it relaxing. I could use a mandolin or food processor but my trusty sharp knife and steady hand make it just right with no mess to clean up (counter or gadgets).
Crack Slaw is delicious. I make an "Italian version" sometimes too with Italian Sausage and stuff other than sesame oil, soy sauce and ginger.4 -
Oh, @kpk54 - you have me intrigued. Will you please give us more details on the Italian version? I always love trying new variations! Actually have it on plan to make Crack Slaw tonight, even. LOL0

Oh just the usual stuff. Mushrooms, a little green pepper, maybe some onions. Maybe a little basil or oregano. Whatever strikes my fancy when I'm making it and doesn't give it that Asian twist.
Since you mention it, a version with an Indian or Mexican twist would be tasty too. I love cabbage.1 -
I made this one the other night and I am in love...

I omitted the carrot. Swapped just one green onion for the onion called for. I used apple cider vinegar rather than rice wine, because the rice vinegar I had on hand had way more carbs than I was aware of....and of course, I added sriracha. But it's by far the best "crack slaw" I've tried.

Now I want bacon and cabbage... love cabbage.0

I do a hodge podge too.
Chop the cabbage. Sometimes add mushrooms, peppers, spinach or greens. Whatever is leftover in the fridge. Sometimes it's been broccoli or cauli. Fried all in ground sausage and its fat (sometimes we have leftover ground beef so it's a blend). Add worchestershire sauce and spices (garlic and herb, basil, steak spice-whatever). Then we either "cream it" by adding sour cream. Or we make it a "cheeseburger bowl" by adding diced pickles, shredded cheddar, and mustard to the finished bowl. Tastes just like a frickin' cheeseburger and the kids LOVE it and often ask for seconds. Except for dd14, who likes making a big to-do about hating cabbage. So we just give her extra and laugh in her face.
It's brilliant, but I can't take the credit. DH came up with the Cheeseburger Bowl.6 -
@baconslave the cheeseburger slaw sounds amazing! I am so going to try it out.1

I make Mexican slaw, use avocado oil, chili powder, garlic and onion powders, sea salt, cilantro, onion, and jalapeno slices. I started making way before going LC, one of my fav Mexican cafes serves it along side the chips. I eat mine with chicharrones now instead of tortilla chips.3 -
My store has two cabbage bags, one with carrots and one without. The one without says "angel hair" slaw mix. It is a great time saver when you are busy. I also dump the broccoli slaw in with a bag of salad mix to up the veggies and give it crunch when I am too busy to chop.0

I made this on V-Day and it was my first time as I'd never heard of crack slaw. It was AWESOME! Perfect Chinese food substitute with all of the flavor. I found zero carb rice vinegar and used that as in the original recipe. I used crushed red pepper flakes because I love hot n spicy food, fresh ginger and garlic, and used a mix of ground beef and pork. I'll be making it again this weekend for a family gathering and they'll love it, I'm sure. Thanks to all for the various recipes2 -
I love crack slaw! Gives me my Chinese food fix. Only thing for me is it is not very filling. I am not really sure why. Last time I made it I kept the hamburger meat grease in the pan and even added bacon grease to saute the cabbage in. Any ideas? I think I will have to try the cheeseburger crack slaw and add bacon and cheese.0

I use 400g coleslaw mix and 300 mince for 2 people. It makes a huge bowl each, I find it plenty filling.0

I finally made this tonight. My husband has been getting tired of just meat and salad or green veggies. This was awesome and just what we needed. We have both been missing oriental food. It was sooo good!3

Need to make this soon. Hubby is going to go low carb starting tomorrow as he has seen how much success I've had on the diet and he wants to get healthier. He would have started sooner but was trying to quit tobacco as well and wasn't sure he could do both....LOL....
He loves cabbage, cabbage rolls, bierox.....So I'm sure he would love this.2 -
I made some with an Indian twist. Add a sliced onion, some sliced mushrooms, coconut milk and curry powder.2

I made a bowlfull for dinner last night. I also picked my first chilli off my plant off the back, sliced it up seeds and all and added that to the crackslaw (one serve - hubby had pizza). I didn't die, but it was about an hour before my mouth stopped tingling ^.^4

I do a similar thing but don't use the meat, I throw it all in a nonstick skillet and crack two eggs in. Scramble in as you cook for a couple minutes, throw soy sauce or Bragg's and hot sauce in and it reminds me of egg foo yung. It's what I had for dinner tonight.3
