Everyone says it, but just how do you do it? How do you take the guidelines of the WW program and turn them into a lifestyle you can live every day...from now on? That is what we are here to explore. Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Newbie? Join in! Veteran? Join in! Your thoughts may be just what someone else needs to hear.

Friday --Jim376 (Jim)

Today's topic: Food Groups. Do you try to pick daily from the 5 major food groups?. 1. Fruits / 2. Non Starchy Vegetables / 3. Meat~Protein / 4. Starches/ Grains / 5. Dairy. If so do you have an amount you est from each group? If not does it ever cross your mind.

I bring this topic up because last Friday I had a scheduled appointment with a Registered Dietitian / RD, LD. I sought out her help and counseling through my MD. One item that came out from out initial meeting was a chart showing the 5 food groups and what she set up as a guideline and how many servings I get from each of those food groups. There is much more to the program than just that. I hope to put forth a post in the near future on the combination of a Registered Dietitian and my working with a Behavioral Health Specialist. More on these when I have more time to get a post together.

    Good Question Derrick.

I use to do this myself when I first joined WW. and was fairly strict about it but I guess when I made goal after time it faded away but this post will make me more aware of what I am doing.

The fitbook I use has a place on each day to mark off these categories. The one I have to be the most mindful of is the vegetables. Checking them off helps me a lot.

I can't do dairy as it messes with my GI system but I take a calcium supplement on the advice of my doctor.

Back when I joined in 2013 the WW GOOD Health Guidelines (GHG) made me try to include dairy, healthy oils and serving of vegetables, fruits etc.

Now as my SPs have been greatly reduced to about half of when I started I have a hard time fitting in all five food groups daily.

This is a good reminder that I should (could) plan my weeks meals with this in mind.

I get Fruits and Protein in daily, Veggies and grains on a regular basis. I need to work on dairy and healthy oils.

No. Not on a daily basis. Across an entire week, yes. Consciously? Never.

I naturally eat from all 5 groups most days, simply for variety, but I don't really pay attention to quantity. I'm most interested in staying within my calorie goal for each day.

It's not something I aim at but except for dairy I'm pretty sure I hit the other groups in a day. Since I quit yogurt for snacks there are some days I don't eat dairy.

The one I focus on most is protein. If I eat a lot of calories and there wasn't much protein involved, I know I'm going to be in trouble later in the day from a satiety standpoint. I try to get 3-5 servings of fruits and vegetables, but I don't eat fruit every day. I'm allergic to casein, so I skip dairy.

I don't do dairy except rare soft ripened cheese. Surprisingly over
something like over 80% of population worldwide don't do dairy and aren't necessarily deficient in calcium. Northern europeans raised cows early on and many developed a genetic mutation (lactose tolerance) to consume milk as adults. Most mammals don't. They others I eat in good balance

I don't make a point of picking from the food groups. However, due in part to the point structure of WW, I steer toward lean proteins, F & Vs, a bit of dairy, and healthy oils. These days, I avoid most starches and carbs. They're not off the table entirely but they're not consumed in anywhere near the quantity of my former life.

If my blood metrics are any indication, it seems this is about the right mix for me now. Surprisingly enough, my blood work wasn't horrible pre-WW. I was never on pre-diabetes meds but as I recall, a few metrics were pushing the envelope a bit. That said, it too has improved over the last couple years.

I tend to eat across all the food groups, but I don't necessarily do it in a calculated way. In the past I focused on that a little more while in losing mode, I was more thoughtful about grains and how often I had them...but since WW's new program it leads you in that direction somewhat naturally.

My food group usage comes about from wanting to pair things to make a tasty meal. And my consumption of fruits is out of always having been a big fruit consumer. And veggies are a side for dinner to get the volume of food I like...and they are zero points. I follow WW SmartPoints, it has served me well.
