About 5 years ago I lost about 20lbs without really trying...looking back I think it had a lot to do with when I moved I changed from a mostly carb and fried diet (normal in the region I lived) to more veggies, less snacking and not frying food; the fact that I was working lots and didn't eat much at work/was limited to what I took so I didn't overeat.

However after losing that 20lbs I have plateaued and the only way I can seem lose or even maintain weight now is with regular activity (I don't go to the gym so I usually make sure I do at least one physical activity every day....more if I actually am trying to lose or be in good shape - walking, running hiking, rollerbladeing, canoeing, swimming)

It doesn't work for me. I need the exercise or the scale doesn't move. Intense exercise required.

I saw greater weight loss with a total diet change than I've ever seen with exercise, and I exercise HARD. Nothing changed until I changed my diet, and I've even cut BACK on the exercise. I think it's totally possible. My trainer says weight loss is 90% food, and 10% exercise.

i have hypothyroidism and SEVERE heart problems. My pulse needs to stay below 105 at all times...for the past week i have limited my caloric intake to 1200 calories per day and removed most dairy products and breads from my diet. I am drinking 8-10 cups of water per day and I have been "walking in place" for 15 minutes per day. I dropped 8 pounds this week. Try sticking to higher proteins and high fiber. And, as I've been telling myself all week - any movement is better than no movement.

THIS. I eat a whole foods, plant-based vegan diet, with zero white flour, and only sprouted grain bread once per day at breakfast. I rarely but sometimes do eat whole wheat tortillas. But yes, the weight FLEW off me, as well. 20 pounds since May, in fact. My carb intake is the max MFP says to get, but those carbs come from fruits, lentils, vegetables, and beans. I eat probably 3/4 of the protein allocation. My thyroid doctor is the one who put me on this diet, it worked for me.... (and yes, zero dairy).

Is resistance/strength training an option for you? It generally doesn't raise your bpm nearly as much as cardio, but still helps raise your metabolism by adding muscle.

Strength training is a good idea even if you are looking to lose weight and not close to goal. It helps with metabolism, general life and overall appearance.
