Is losing 13 pounds in the first week of keto normal?

Hi all,
I just started going LCHF last Sunday keeping my carb <20g for health reasons (type 2 diabetes), and I've gone from 272lbs to 259lbs... I'm assuming this is mostly water weight??

It's not abnormal... but everyone loses different amounts.
Depends how much you have to lose. If you have chronic health conditions, insulin resistance, how well you followed keto... all sorts of variables affect it. No doubt there was a lot of water. Hopefully you've been replacing sodium because you lost lots of that too.
    Great start! Keto on!

I started at 222lbs and lost 8 in my first week. Mainly water and bloat.

I'd say it is on the high side. Congrats BTW! :) I good portion of it is probably water weight but you never know. Keosis agreed with me too and I consitently lost 2-3 bs per week after the initial loss of 5 or so lbs. It did not slow until I only had 10-15 lbs to go. Enjoy it. ;)

Do watch sodium though. a sudden drop in carbs will require 3000-5000 mg or more in sodium per day. There's 2300 mg of sodium in 1 teaspoon of table salt. If you get tired, headachy and such, you may need salt.

It took a few weeks before I finally had the sodium light turned on in my boiler room - thanks exclusively to the advice I picked up here - and it's made a big difference in how I feel.

It's also a good idea to give the junk being liberated from your fat cells an easy path to leave your body as soon as it's paroled - so drink plenty of fluids to wash the sodium down.

I will be interested to see if your glucose numbers improve with the LCHF the way mine did. I did not enjoy the initial dramatic loss some people do.

I just went from 180.8 to 169.8 in a week and a half of cutting. You're far from being outside the norm, especially when you consider your starting weight. Hell, I was only about 16-17% bodyfat, and I clipped eleven in a week and a half.

My glucose actually pretty much reverted to me not having to take insulin anymore...amazing! And thanks for all the tips guys/girls I look forward to continuing on this path of healthy eating. I'm getting ~5000mg of sodium a day so I never experienced "keto flu" either which I read was not very pleasant.

Glad to hear you got the sodium message early enough to avoid the "keto flu." I have doubted the sodium message for years, or at least believed it only affected some people based on genetics. I also never experienced any of the symptoms I hear about.

I intentionally kept my sodium higher than normal before just because I am more likely to struggle with low BP than high BP which causes some problems when standing up too fast.

I was easily over 4000 before. Now, I am nearly always over 6000 and still had BP of 102/53 when I went to the dentist a couple weeks ago. Part of the increase now has been adding in before the gym in the morning once I heard that would help with fatigue which was 100% accurate.

I had a doctor's appt. today. BP was 124/78. Weight is down on the doctors scales just a little over 64 pounds since January 2016. I had a blood draw, and he told me if my A1C is under 6, I am supposed to cut my metformin dose. I am pleased with how things are going so far...

Hmm. :s Is your doctor a GP or a genuine diabetes specialist? (I'm guessing the former..??)

From what I understand, there's not much point in lowering Metformin much below its stated effective dose of 2000mg.

A1c = 6 is still significantly higher that non - diabetic levels. Since that's my goal, I would look at that advice with a... sodium supplement.

    Regardless, congrats on your progress!

He is a GP for sure and very old school. If the A1C comes back under 6, I may try it for a week or so to see the impact on the glucose levels. The results of the pee-in-a-cup test came back Microalbumin Creatinine Ratio is 6 mg/gm, and that seems at the low end of the range, so I am good there.

Right. How could I forget? :|

No matter, you're safely several steps ahead of him!

    Good luck!
