Newbie - upset stomach when eating

Hello! I'm a newbie that's been stalking here and there. Read all of the "important" posts, which took a while, but there was some great info in there! Thank you for putting that all in one place.

I've been aiming for less than 50 carbs a day for several days now. I've been really focusing on getting enough sodium, and if I feel myself starting to feel crappy, I get yet more sodium in my life and that's been helping.

I've been struggling to get my calories in. I know that's normal, so I'm not pressed about that. Sadly, I know it will regulate as I adjust! But my concern/problem/annoyance is that when I DO eat, I can only take a few bites before my stomach starts getting upset, almost nauseated. Dreading that feeling is hindering my eating. So I'm not really getting meals, but more nibbles of things here and there. Is this also something that will pass? Is my body just very confused about what the heck I'm doing? I'm moving from the SAD, so it IS a big adjustment. But it's relatively concerning. I mean, I used to be able to binge eat 4000 calories at a time without blinking an eye, and now I'm struggling to consume 300 calories in one sitting.

Thoughts? Just give it time?

On a good note, I've lost 7 pounds this week. I know it's water weight, but man it's nice to see that scale movement!

If your insurance permits, I might suggest getting evaluated by a competent GI specialist and a smart immunologist.

The cause(s) could be any number of things, and I would want to eliminate other likely suspects before concluding that the diet's to blame.

    Good luck!

I wonder about your fat intake.
Many times out in the wild keto lands, people are advised to eat obscene amounts of added fats at every meal and this is completely unnecessary and often the cause of nausea assuming sodium is within range for your carb level. Sounds like you've got the sodium knowledge, so my next thought is excessive fat intake or possibly eating a food you never really ate before. ... ???

RalfLott, thank you for bumping those threads for me! And if this continues, I will absolutely get checked out. Fortunately I have fantastic insurance.

Sunny, my fat isn't higher than my normal crappy diet used to be, I don't think. I didn't log for a very long time, so I packed on more weight. Just on 3/2 I started logging again, and I did several days of just eating "normally" and logging it to see what my baseline was. On March 8 I did lower carb, and on March 9 I started aiming for 50 grams of carbs a day. So if you wanted, you can see what my fat intakes are. I'm not religiously weighing things right now since I'm just trying to get into a good habit of logging before I start making it harder. And with as not hungry as I've been, I know I'm not eating too many calories. I think I'm actually eating less fat than I did before.

Nothing is really new to my diet. I had pork rinds tonight, which were new. ;-) My dinner of bone broth, pork rinds, and guacamole is actually sitting well right now. But my egg salad I'd made for lunch did not. I only ate half of it. Which is too bad because it was pretty good - pasture raised eggs and pasture raised bacon. Maybe it's the bacon? I haven't had bacon in forever and I've been eating it the past few days. Maybe I'll lay off of it for a few days. It IS super rich.

I appreciate the feedback from each of you! I'm so glad I found this forum!

You'll get the hang of it.

FWIW, It does help to try to log pretty carefully, especially in the beginning. It's a long way from an exact science, but it may help you identify trends, should the need arise.

    Good luck!

Nitrates will do that to me. Its easy in the early days (or, any day really) to gorge myself on cured meats, red wine and cheese cause ITS ALL ON PLAN! But that will upset my tummy like no other. Logging religiously is excellent advice. It may help you track down what is upsetting your system.

Zero bacon today, and zero stomach upset. Still only ate like 800 calories, but I ate it happily and without nausea. I do think it was the bacon. Kind of disappointing that it affected me that way! I'll try it again down the road once I'm more adjusted to eating this way. I began weighing my food today, too. You guys are right that it's important to start that habit sooner rather than later.

On a side note, one of my coworkers told me my face already looks like I've lost some weight. Woot!

When I first switched over I never used to eat bacon: it took ages before i could break it down and be fine. for me the helpful inbetween step was to have some yogurt with breakfast. I still often have yogurt as I like it but on days i don't its fine :)

You could also try eating uncured bacon - it should not have nitrates and that will point a definite finger at whether or not you are sensitive to them.

Would locally pasture-raised bacon be cured and have nitrates? I thought that was the safe way to go to avoid that stuff. But when I am brave enough to try bacon again, I'll definitely aim for nitrate free. Thank you!

Glad I'm not alone with the bacon! It seems like such a staple of low-carb eating, but I guess not at first! LOL Which yogurt brand do you like? I haven't checked the carb levels on yogurt yet. I used to enjoy Noosa's yogurt.

Once I had been doing the Low carb thing for a while (I am talking months so not like many here who have been at it for years), I found that certain carbs seemed to trigger some serious GI distress. It seems to be a function of the number of them as well as the type. I have gotten good at avoiding more than 10 carbs or so in a single sitting, but every now and then you are trying to be good and next thing you know, you are looking for a bathroom.

At the risk of providing TMI, I had a half orange with breakfast. My total net carbs yesterday were 3, and my soft limit is 20. I figured I could have half an orange and meet the soft goal for today.

Let's just say the speed at which that breakfast made its way through the digestive tract did not provide much opportunity for absorption of nutrients.

I did the same thing with dinner last night. Had a shrimp stirfry and I normally try to limit the amount of veggies and eat more of the meat in a stirfry, but the veggies were tasting so good to me I overdid it a little.

My tummy was letting me know all about it this morning! :)

My son vomits if he has nitrates, so we buy nitrate free lunch meat, hot dogs, bacon, etc. Glad you seem to have found the culprit!
