Blood ketone meter and Dr Mercola diet

I finally bought and read Keto-Clarity. Great read.
I was wondering if anyone uses a blood ketone meter as mentioned in the book? How useful has it been.

As an aside is anyone following Dr. Mercola's diet plan. The macros are simular to that of Keto Clarity. Basically IF with 2 meals daily a smoothie and salad. I ilke the simplicity of the meal plan on paper.

If I can offer my advice, as someone who has spent hundreds of dollars monitoring ketones (although not specifically while following Keto Clarity). I wouldn't do it again. I spent so much monitoring every way: urine, breath, and blood. And, it didn't change a thing. When I ate right, I was in ketosis.

The numbers and data didn't provide any benefit.

@Jdkbs, I think the blood ketone tests may be most useful for pinpointing how many carbs you can eat, with how much exercise, etc., and stay in ketosis. Phinney and Volek report wide variations....

(Is that close to the use Mercola suggests?)

Thank you, I appreciate the responses.

I think focusing on eating right is the plan.

Following that if I want to do some experimentation and spend money use a blood ketone meter.

@FIT_Goat - I purchased the Ketonix breath analyzer as I was wanted to measure my ketones since I am doing to diet primarily to see if will help with my epilepsy (and I don't like poking myself for a blood test), but it seemed I could have such varying results depending on how hard I would blow, etc. Did you seem to find that as well?

I find the same results with the $12 version off eBay (guts of Ketonix version I read) but I still use it most days and is basically free compared to the bloody ketone test strips but they are needed if one has a need/want to know true ketone blood levels because those ketones are the only ones that count health wise. I test a lot of different protocols can just want to see my ballpark Keto levels. Sometimes I get highest numbers before I even get out of bed and start moving.

I got a similar one off Amazon too ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VFWWNXO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ). I was skeptical at first, but I figure for just $10..... why not?? The readings I get are on par with what I get with the urine test strips -which I've been comparing for the last week or so. I'm extremely happy with this cheap purchase that actually seems to work for our purposes!! I can't believe the price difference between these cheap BAC keychain testers vs the "official" tester.

BAC keychain to test ketones?! Cool.
I love how much I learn from this group.

Plus the "official" high dollar testers exclude acetone detection so they will not work to gauging ketones from the breath.

The below has the nice graph of nutritional ketosis levels.

I like & follow Mercola. He seems to really research everything greatly & in depth. I loosely incorporate much of his diet plan & philosophy into my own as well -though I don't do the smoothie, but I've been toying around with the idea of IF. I guess you could say that my main focus has been the ratios of the standard keto diet, but I try using the advice from Mercola & the likes to figure out the details beyond that.

Sorry, just saw this. In general, the breath meter was close to the blood results. Maybe not as specific, but it is measuring a different level. And those levels don't have a direct 1-to-1 relationship. So, I can't say if it was specific or not.

    Gotcha....Well thanks for your response!
