Anyone care to ID the türd in the punchbowl?

"A Journal of the American Medical Association study examined how 10 dietary factors — fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, whole grains, unprocessed red meat, processed meat, sugary drinks, polyunsaturated fats, s 7eafood (with omega-3 fats), and sodium — were associated with deaths due to heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, or stroke.

The researchers examined data from national nutrition surveys and found that nearly half — 45 percent — of the deaths in the examined data were due to not eating enough, or eating too much, of the 10 dietary factors.

High sodium was found to be responsible for the most deaths in the study, followed by high processed meats and low seafood/omega 3s, low vegetables, low fruits, and high sugary drinks."

'Responsible' how in the world did they get that from a national survey of dead people?

And yes, I'm poking fun at how they got the data.

Above tt said too high or too low consumption caused death (didn't read the article). Was it too low of consumption of sodium that caused death?

Unfortunately, the first link doesn't work and the abstract lacks enough detail to be very useful.

That said, when they tie too much sodium to death, I have to think about those foods which have high sodium in the SAD - chips, fries, crackers, etc - all of which are also high carb and made with highly processed veg oils. Then I look at even things which may not be quite as bad like nuts, and if you eat the most common ones, they are also cooked in highly processed veg oils and have fillers added as "flavors" which are just a way to sneak in more carbs.

Whenever looking at this kind of "study," one must realize correlation does not equal causation. Otherwise you could say police cause crime because you always find them at crime scenes.

That's my suspicion, too, but I don't have access to the full text...

Pretty soon they're going to tell us that too much breathing or not breathing at all, can cause death.

One out of 2 ain't bad.
That would be far more reliable news than any of the above bollards....

In general, it's a good idea to keep an open mind to conclusions that don't match currently-held beliefs...

(We've all been certain of things that weren't actually true, eh?)

Oh I couldn't agree more. I'd like more research available on the above claims though, but I won't hold my breath....Oh....hang on....
