Atkins bars?

So someone bought me Atkins bars so I wouldn't "feel left out" on Easter... I must say the cheesecake and mini eggs were a bit difficult to pass up. But anyway, I have had one a day now, there's 5 of them. Are they the reason I'm up 4lbs now? I am not over in calories or anything. Hmm.. I thought I could have something like those as a treat sometimes. Guess not. :/

Some people do experience that. I'm not sure if its excess sodium or sugar alcohols or what. I like them, but I only use them occasionally, usually if I'm going to be doing a lot of traveling where eating keto can be difficult.

Highly likely! You could be reacting to any number of the ingredients in the bars, including whatever artificial sweetener they are using.

Another though occurred. I don't experience this with Atkins, but Fiber One or Special k bars have an additive that bloats me within a few hours. Its possible its something like that. I can't recall the name of the additive, something to do with the added fiber.

I hope I didn't screw myself over. I thought they would be fine! I drink diet coke sometimes and that doesn't seem to affect me, and I also have lots of coffee with sweetener. The bars taste like heaven to me, my fiancé says they are bland haha.

I like the bars and the shakes, but like I said I only use them sometimes. The additive is something to do with pine and is how they put in the "added fiber." If that is in Atkins I've never noticed it. I think if you just back down from them for a few days and go back to normal your weight will stabilize again.

It seems like some people are more sensitive to them and the "faux foods" than others. Maybe conduct a test and eliminate them for a week and see if you notice an impact? I've tried to stay away from the processed treats, but found myself with a box of the Breyer's carb smart icecream bars in my freezer. Sometimes I just REALLY want a treat, and I'd rather go for the imposter than the real thing.

I count the total carbs, not the net, and make it fit in my day. I went to two stores searching for the Atkins brownies, because I passed up real brownies at work and was fiending for my fix. Anywhoo, through all my babbling, what I wanted to say is to maybe switch from daily ingestion to once or twice a week and hopefully that will allow you a balance of a treat and still a loss?

Did you read the label, spotting funny fibers and funny sweeteners (like "polydextrose"), rice starch, etc?

Of course, eating 1 Atkins bar is not like chewing through a Snickers bar or bag of caramel popcorn with a leaded Coke as an escort, but it's a long way from real, unprocessed food.

Well I'm only going to eat this box of them, I'm not going to buy them on a regular basis. I'm not using them for meal replacements or anything. I didnt even plan on having anything off course for Easter but I didn't want to pass them up since I thought they were okay, and someone thought of me and bought them for me. I have one left, I might throw it out or I might eat it. I'll take a look at the ingredients for sure.

They have 55mg of sucralose, and 2g of polydextrose in each bar.

I would treat them as candy.
As often as you feel you can have a candy bar while trying to lose weight... that's how often I'd have one.

Well you might have screwed yourself over only as long as it takes to get your insulin levels down again. In my opinion (and others) Atkins bars are marketed to the low carb community to make money, look at the total carbs! Look the ingredients, polydextrose is a synthetic sugar there is corn fiber and soy protein isolate. This is a highly processed manufacturer food. If it comes from a box I stay away.

FWIW, of all the low carb/sugar-free/diet foods I've ever tried, Atkins bars are the only thing my digestive system didn't react well to. For me it was bloating and stomach pain.

Those *kitten* sugar alcohols and their cousins have a way of overcoming even the most stubborn of gastrointestinal inhibitions!

The Atkins products played a pretty predominant role in my "artificial sweeteners" experiment. That time period caused me to go from losing weight, to gaining. My intake did go up. I was eating to hunger, and the sweeteners made me hungrier. But, my weight went up way more than the calories would suggest.

I avoid Atkins products like the plague these days.

I can't eat Atkins bars. The stall my weightloss something shocking - even if I'm under calories. I do keep a couple of Protein FX bars and Quest bars in the cupboard for those times when you just gotta, but I'd eat maybe one a fortnight.

Easter Sunday I went out and bought a 100g block of dark chocolate. 27g of carbs in the whole thing, and I ate the whole thing. I do better with that than trying to have a square a day - it's gone now and I can move on. And yesterday morning I was down 1.5kg from Friday. I think if you need to have a treat for a special occasion (easter etc) just have that treat, minimise the damage as much as you can, and try and avoid those fake bars and stuff.

Yeah, screw them then. I'm done with it! I feel better eating unprocessed stuff anyways. But I'll be damned if I give up my coffees :|

Every day I am working toward only eating foods without labels except dairy. I am also working toward getting all my meat grass fed. I already buy eggs from someone at work who raises chickens naturally.

Unfortunately a side affect of low carb gaining popularity is companies have begun trying to make foods they can market to those who want to try it but don't fully understand all the potential pitfalls like sugar alcohols and unpronounceable additives that will prevent them from attaining the the health benefits of cutting the carbs.

Don't get me wrong, I am a capitalist through and through. I think it is important to have educated consumers so the companies can truly make quality products and not "low carb"junk food that isn't really low carb. That will only come when enough of us demand it.
