I found this explanation very helpful. Particularly explaining how high trigs and low HDL produce more VLDL and then they react with blood sugar to cause plaques. And how statins specific use is to clear VLDL. Also, the trigs number to stay under. 1.1 (in Oz and Canadian terms)
