Hi my name is Ken I'm 47 and have hypothyroidism. I have lost some weight but now it seems to have come to a halt. I haven't been taking my medicine for it should I start taking it again.

Hi Ken, its never a good idea not to take the medication a doctor suggests you need unless you are having problems taking it for some reason. In this situation I would suggest you ask if you could try a different brand.
Being hypo does make weight loss difficult for many. I suggest you read some of the references given on the group page. It really helps to increase your understanding hypothyroidism not least so you can express yourself in a better way so your doctor understands more how this is effecting you.
Being hypo causes your digestive transit to slow and our uptake of vitamins and minerals is less effective. Many of us use vitamin and mineral supplements as well as the usual t4 medication to help us process it properly. Other people may need other thyroid medications if they are available in their country.
Possibly you could ask your doctor if your hypo because you have the autoimmune Hashimoto's thyroiditis, it is the most common form, expressed by the presence of antibodies. The benefit of knowing would be, you could then set about discovering the cause of your antibodies, to eliminate them or may be use dietary enzymes to help your body digest something you have an intolerance to. Many doctors do not see a need to identify the presence of antibodies and leave us unaware.0 -
Welcome aboard!
What manner of hypothyroidism were you diagnosed with? Why did you stop taking your medication?
I had a total thyroidectomy in 2000 and put on ~70 lbs over the next 14 years. This had nothing to do with being hypothyroid. I transitioned from a physically demanding military career to cushy civilian life in academia, had no clue what I was eating, and never exercised. I found MFP in 2014 and lost ~60 lbs in the first year.

Go and see the doctor and get some bloods done to see if you need medication!
Usually it's very difficult to lose weight at all if you are underactive and not on meds (even when you are)
If it's just a plateau try changing your diet and exercise up for a few days0
