Tricorders are moving from Star Trek to reality. (Just like tablet computers and voice controlled computers have.)

And you thought ketone strips were expensive!
Hopefully it's not just vaporware.3 -
Awesome, time machines were invented too!?!
How else did Tony Danza get to be 25 again?2 -
Awesome. Not only will we be getting faster medical services but at a lower cost.0

Looks interesting for sure, no guarantees it will do much for healthcare costs though. At least it's a start though!
Unfortunately something I encounter quite frequently is what I like to call "the webMD phenomena", where someone basically feels a little off, looks online, then calls 911 cause they're convinced they have cancer, or a heart attack or something. So in that regard it could actually be detrimental to an already stretched thin system!

You're not far wrong, @medic2038 ... I know a lady that, two days into a light sniffle, is suffering a pulmonary embolism or chronic pneumonia..... according to her own 'web search' conclusions.....0

On the other hand, one can also find the Tapeworm Diet online, for those leaning more toward miracle cures than imminent death.
(The merry tapeworm may not show up until the faithful dieter's autopsy, having relieved the health care system of any treatment burden.)

You may or may not be surprised, @RalfLott that tapeworm treatment has been utilised by brides and grooms to be, in order to fit the dress/tux in time for the wedding, and using a standard parasitic work medication/killer to eliminate said worm, shortly before the wedding.
You couldn't make it up....

I see, er, experience, what our cats produce when we have to give them worms-b-gone pills. Our litter boxes aren't big enough for a human experiment!0 -
If you have a young child, build them a sandpit, then use that. Blame the cats. Works like a charm....1

The flip side of that, and arguably one of the driving reasons for web research, is the fact that the medical community has been failing a great number of people for a great number of years, and it's frequently pressure from people without degrees that actually pushes medicine forward and raise the bar for doctors.
Dr. Bernstein is one such person. He didn't have a medical degree when he started treating his diabetes in a way that ran contrary to the medical establishment of the day. His way is now the standard.
You're always going to have hypochondriacs, that doesn't mean there aren't people who are actually informed by the same studies the doctors have access to. If you, as a medical person, want more respect, spend more than 30 seconds with your patients and actually listen to them when they say something is off. Gone are the days of commands from on high, and an age of collaboration is dawning. It's insane to think that because you hold a degree, you know more about what's going on with a person after 30 seconds than the person who's living with whatever is going on.6 -
