Russel Stovers sugar free mistake!

So it's shark week(sorry if tmi) and I wanted some chocolate. I decided to get some sugar free pecan caramel clusters (fake turtles). I'm really regretting not getting my usual 85% cocoa bar. Within about an hour of eating 3 chocolates I'm so bloated I look pregnant and oh my god the cramping. Is there anything I can do to make this stop or pass more quickly? I know eating to many sugar alcohols can cause side affects but didn't think 3 chocolates was too many. There was 3 more in the bag and they are now in the garbage. NEVER AGAIN!!

Go to the bathroom. Usually that's the only thing that stops it for me. It's got to get out the other side. Fortunately, that stuff tears through my like a bat out of hell, so it doesn't hang around inside for long.2

Lay on the floor curled in a ball. That's all I can do when I have even a tiny amount of sugar alcohols.
I hope it passes soon for you!

Not all sugar alcohols cause that kind of reaction...but with a lot of the more common "sugar-free" chocolates and candies, it's usually MALTITOL that's the culprit. For many people, some of the better sugar alcohols (like erythritol and xylitol) don't cause such an adverse reaction...but again, this is a person to person thing so experiment cautiously! Sorry you had to go through that (I think we all learn this lesson the hard way)!4

Three's the magic number for me too. Two, fine...three, toilet.2

True, the Amazon comments for Russell Stover SF pecan delights don't have the same tidal waves of reviews warning of nuclear GI aftershocks as, say, the legendary Haribo SF Gummi Bears, but the caution flags are there for those paranoid/prudent enough to look.
For example:These are yummy but at a horrible price, both money wise and another way. If you have a sensitive stomach, BEWARE. Unless you want to be the HUMAN FARTOMIC BOMB for a whole day, go easy on these. Although all I had to eat was two to feel the horrible side effects. Major cramping and explosive gas that could clear a room in seconds flat. Also, just because something is sugar free does not mean that it's always good for diabetics, some people's blood sugars still rise when eating these. If you do decide to do this to yourself, only eat one or two. You have been warned. Some people react even worse than I did, with full blown Diarrhea. It all depends how your system reacts to the sugar alcohol chemicals they use. " May cause laxative effect" is putting it lightly. I can't believe they get away with what they do in the processed food industry.

Yes! Let's do it at your place. Better yet, at an ADA meeting!
Shall we begin rounding up the usual suspects? (You know *kitten* well who you are.....)3 -
Lately I've had two 85 g almond chocolate RS bars (2 different nights) which taste good enough but poor bloated tummy and nasty gas. At least no runs but definitely discomfort.0

On a scale of 1 - 10 (with 10 being, uh, a cousin of colonoscopy prep)?0 -
Good to be aware of. The only thing I've really had a problem with is Atkins bars, but when trying new SF stuff I definitely need to mind the amounts when initially experimenting! You all scare me.1

In this discussion, let us not forget the "Revenge of the Wow Potato Chips", the "healthy" alternative back then. After my Dad had a bypass, I thoughtlessly told him about it, and he ate the entire bag! Poor man, he really suffered gastric problems with those. All this artificial stuff is going to come back and bite us in the patootie.1

Quite a few moons ago I purchased "sugar free" (Made with Malitol) chocolates from a local chocolatier.. I thought "oh hey I can eat six of these and it will be fine!". Thank god they were pricey b/c six was all I was willing to spend $$ on, which I ate, all in one go, like a good chocoholic. I spent the entire night alternating between the crapper and being curled up in the fetal position praying for a quick death. Never again.... NEVER again....1

My exact experience with sugar-free (but not pain-free) ice cream, starring Sorbitol. Sore butt all weekend....0 -
I guess I was fortunate enough to not get diarrhea but the cramping and bloating was more extreme than I have ever experienced before. I've learned my lesson sugar alcohols are EVIL. I still can't get over that 3 chocolates made me feel so incredibly awful.0

FYI, I have had no trouble - blood glucose, GI wars, or bad taste - from Erythritol, straight or blended with stevia (little green liquid bottle). Same with sucralose, though I generally avoid it.
I liked Xylitol, but I did have a "one-nanogram-too-many" experience with that one, too. I still use it sparingly, and I don't avoid it in gum.
But Maltitol, Sorbitol, and some of those others - the falsest, finkiest of friends!0 -

The only one that I have noticed (since I don't eat gummy-anything and hate milk chocolate) that has ever affected me was Ice Breakers sugar free mints. They have a combination of sorbitol, maltitol. maltodextrine and aspartame to sweeten them. If I eat more than 4-5 of the little *kitten*, I can power a wind farm for the rest of the day.1 -
Oh no I love those things but I do have to limit them or space then or throughout the day as they are pretty rough on my tummy too. Stick with the dark chocolate lol0

I went against my own personal experience and had the same candies a few days ago. Man the voluminous amount of rancid air that emanated from my *kitten* was frightening. And continuous....1

Well, of course! Best of both worlds, though... Certain acts, (like those that would be necessary if we were all to move en masse to some remote island to found and perpetuate a cult of low carbers), would not be criminal......1 -
I use the brand below. It is only 80 calories with 5 grams of carbs per square. I often eat it with coconut flakes. I like the bold taste and keep it at home and in my office desk. So far no side effects.

A spoonful of peanut butter does the trick for me...
Delightfully creamy and sweet.
I've erred on the side of extreme caution from "sugar free" any candy since my parents gave my uncle a bag they received as a gift...and well...he called with some quite expletive and tmi descriptions of what happened to him. Akin to the infamous sf haribo Gummy bear amazon reviews. And I was a young child. The horror!3
