Brats and Keto

So, I just recently rediscovered brats while on keto and to say the least I'm a little obsessed. I love cooking them with some peppers on the stove, mmmMmm. Anyhow, does anyone know if there's anything in particular I should worry about eating them a couple times a week?

OMG. I'm so sorry. I actually thought you were referring to putting children on a keto diet....18

I eat them too. Love them grilled!
I just look for ones without a whole bunch of suspicious looking ingredients.
There's usually something like dextrose listed but if I understand correctly it's just used in curing and therefore is negligible.
Check total carb count. You should easily find them around 2-3g total carbs.3 -

LOL! Me too. Particularly I thought of how you would describe MY children if they were forced keto. Heavens! Insufferable, most likely.

Well, you're not the first. Jonathan Swift claimed to have it on good, Yankee authority:
"... a young healthy child, well nursed, is, at a year old, a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food; whether stewed, roasted, baked or boiled, and I make no doubt, that it will equally serve in a fricassee, or ragout.”
Of course, some of these options will be more Paleo than others....

I like sausages. TBH, I eat a bit of processed meats on most days. There are studies that the nitrates of processed meats can raise you risk of colon cancer by 20%, but that just means it raises the risk of colon cancer from 5% to 6% of all people. It sounded scary but then I did the math and decided I would risk it.
You can always look for brats without preservatives. We make our own bratwurst so it must be kept frozen. Yummy though!AlexandraCarlyle wrote: »OMG. I'm so sorry. I actually thought you were referring to putting children on a keto diet....

Whoops, the confusion. I'm yet to have children so that thought didn't cross my mind. Glad to hear others are also keto with BRATwurst lol. Just not one of the typical foods I hear from others.0

But do watch the labels - there's more than a little sugar in some of them, especially the flavored ones.0 -
There is a specialist company in the UK who sells absolute blinders of total quality 'Wurst (as we tend to call it in the UK. 'Brats' really are kids, and I don't think they want people believing they use real, true full-fat, home-grown, organic, bona-fide small children!)
Quality comes at a price, of course. But then, if we purport to eat all-natural non-processed foods to our total gastronomic and dietary advantage - then sometimes, spending it is worth it.0 -
Lol I also thought you were referring to Children until I read through your post. I'm dying over here!3

No. Too many carbs in the Witch's cottage....
More Johnathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal".
It is widely understood and accepted that, although an eminent and well-known satirist and critic of the elite, there is every reason to believe (let alone suspect) that he was being absolutely serious.1 -

Where can I buy this deliciousness? My local butcher does not sell children yet, just every other type. I can imagine slow cooking a leg will be amazing.1 -

Maybe you've got a Sweeney Todd in your neighborhood who'll know what to do if you ask for brats...

Sweeny Todd wouldn't know what to do with a Gentleman's Sweetbread if it slapped him in the face with a wet Kidney. It was Mrs Lovett, his accomplice and partner-in-Crime who did all the cooking, baking and lush stuff.2 -
Dude, these threads are so confusing when you don't live in the USA.
What you call a sausage, I am sure is not a sausage here. Sounds more like a deli meat or a salami? A Sausage to me is something a butcher would make, with beef or pork, in a thin skin.
And a brat, what is that? Apart from a naughty child. I have 3 of those myself.
A hotdog is a sausage on a stick, battered and deep fried for me. An american hotdog is a very processed type sausage, like a pre-cooked meat, in a bun with tomato sauce and mustard.
Also, your burgers are just a blob of minced beef, a burger here is meat in a bun with salad stuff, and cheese.1 -
Brat. = Abkürzung für Bratwurst, Bratwürste.
To wit, a sausage that's grilled or pan-fried.0 -
A brat, 2 slices of bacon, and a handful of cheese all in a low carb wrap.... heavenly2

Above are brats. Common in the upper midwest of the US, anyway. Oddly enough, I think of them as a 4th of July, Memorial Day kind of thing, since they are lovely at a cookout. Choose between a brat or a polish, around here (nothing to do with eating kids or members of a particular ethnic group).
And yeah, that they fit so easily in my LCHF macros has been a perk. I still don't eat them that often, but occasionally and joyfully.2 -

Having them tonight. I like to grill them outside and serve with a super grainy mustard (a garlic mustard even, which is even more "beefy"). If I have carbs to "spend", I'll put a them in a six carb tortilla. The chewiness of that as a "bun" is a game changer. I barely miss the fries the rest of my family enjoys... as I eat my... sigh... salad.1 -
We grilled brats yesterday. We had them with sauerkraut, grilled home garden zucchini, and layered bacon over the zucchinis while grilling them. Yum!
Forgot to add, sliced fresh from our garden, heirloom tomatoes.2
