I was wondering if anyone had any strong opinions about programs that one can use as a way to prepare for a powerlifting event? I have a friend who's looking at Paul Carter's strong-15 to peak for the meet that we are participating in October.

just depends where you are in your progress, if you use gear, etc. my opinions are

    if you're new: Madcows/Bill Starr 5x5 or 5/3/1
if you've been around but train raw : cube method, sheiko
if you know your stuff and train in gear: westside, cube

Am I understanding this correctly, that you gradually build up to doing your 1RM right before the event? If so, that seems to run counter to everything I've read.

I use 5/3/1 in general, but I was wondering about changing it just for the run-up to the event itself. I don't think I'd want to end up doing a 5/3/1 week just before my event, for example. It's my first event, so I don't want to overcomplicate things but I was just curious about what is out there.

Read again. New 1rm a week before. A week is plenty of rest.
