What is a good lap pool?

Just read this MFP blog post about "famous" US lap pools: http://blog.myfitnesspal.com/americas-10-must-visit-lap-pools/ -- but some of them don't appear to actually fit the bill. I don't see markers on the bottoms or walls, which may not seem like much to casual swimmers but are kind of important for grinding out a mile or more. I get that changing the historic pools is probably a no-go but ... then are they really a lap pool? I have tried to do laps in a non-marked pool and even in one that was not marked and didn't have lanes -- a very frustrating experience and not what I am looking for physically or mentally...

What's your definition of a good lap pool?

Must at least have lane ropes. If not, some people well swoon across the pool and diagonally creating a health hazard in the form or getting hot in the face and head.
That is what happened to me swimming in pills in China with no lane ropes. These pools had the lanes stripes in the floor if the pool. But that does stop anyone from accruing like they own the pool.
