Getting sick from carbs?

I've been doing keto for a couple weeks and yesterday decided to go off the diet to celebrate my son's birthday and my tenth anniversary on the same day (thought technically I was celebrating it being my LAST anniversary because ex and I are finalizing my divorce =p).

So I had two Trader Joe's gluten free cupcakes (2 holidays=2cupcakes, just does). I've had these many times without getting sick (I have celiac so I can get sick from small amounts of gluten). Last night I was dying, though. I woke up with stomach cramping. And, based on symptoms this morning, I'm hopeful that nothing from last night actually stayed in my body long enough to digest. I'll spare you the details.

Does this happen? I've gone off ketosis before and not gotten ill. But I haven't really done massive sugar, more likely a piece of gluten free toast or a bowl of rice.

I've had a couple of day when I went significantly over on sugary carbs and never got ill, just lethargic. It sounds like the same is true for you-well maybe not significantly over on carbs, but over and not getting ill. Others say they get sick with a cookie or something minor.

For now, I'd blame your ailment on the cupcakes and not test it by trying them again. Hope you're feeling better this AM.

I went off once. I got soooooo sick. I had popcorn and candy and soda at a movie theater in March, after being on Keto for about 5-6 weeks. Haven't strayed off course since! I probably will never eat popcorn again, the smell even turns my stomach now... it's like tequila for people who've been hurt by it. Just can't!

Same here! Even after 2 weeks, if I had something really carby I'd end up very ill. Our body loses the tolerance for it, I think.

I'm celiac too, but even gluten free junk food is crap for your body nutritionally. The toast and the rice are at least more 'real' foods. If I eat garbage GF food I get sick, even pre-LC. You might want to look at the ingredient list to see if you have issues with certain gums or other additives.
Sorry that all sounded rather blunt, even if it is the truth, :*

It has been a while since I have strayed from keto. Today is the church picnic, and I am toying with having a piece of fried chicken. MFP tells me it is 11 carbs, but they are bad carbs. I may do it and check glucose when I get home to find out if this was a (really) stupid thing to do. If I have gi distress, I will dutifully report it.

I am hesitant to mess with a good thing wrt to glucose. For the past six days all my readings have been in the 90's except for one 103 and two in the 80's. This is a good place for me to be, and I want to stay on track.

    Decisions, decisions...

I went ahead and ate the fried chicken breast for lunch with two deviled eggs. When I got home, I checked glucose. This was more or less a 2 hr pp check. It was 94, and I have had no gi distress from the bad carbs. I am counting this as an n=1 experiment that came out ok.

Hmm.. A 2-hour check may not tell you how high your BG got, though it may not have gotten any higher. Mine tends to peak around 30-45 minutes from when I start (or at least it did when I made the unpleasant discovery... )

I can do a sugar dump when i come off LCHF (but it tends to speed up my heartrate and I feel a bit jittery) so I can manage a cookie, or a bite of brownie, but something about bread products leave me bloated, gassy and generally feeling naff. Going to go out on a limb and suggest it affects us all differently? Another option to consider is someone stuffed up in the kitchen and the gf cupcakes were contaminated?

I did a couple of 30 minute checks early after reading something you had written. They seemed to be about the same as 1 hr and maybe a hair lower. I seemed to be peaking about an hour after eating. 90 min checks are virtually identical to 2 hr ones for me anyway, and 95% of the time they are lower than the 1 hr. This checking of course was done when I was not eating a few "bad" carbs, so the "bad" carbs might have thrown the pattern off. It might have been instructive to check after an hour but that was not an option for me today. It does not seem that I have shot myself in the foot with this though.

I am not going to recommend it as a general practice, and it is unlikely to be anything but a rare event for me as things are going (unless I do more rigorous testing).

I am finally in a place where I am pretty happy with the glucose readings. I don't want to mess with success.

I am convinced of this. I am sure certain foods impact different people different ways. It just takes some paying attention to figure it all out for your body. A famous one is with artificial sweeteners...

Yesterday I picked up a banana milk shake at Dairy Queen for a family member. It was in a thin clear plastic glass and started to come out of the straw slits. I ate about 1/2 oz and thought I was going to throw up shortly afterwards. I have been off of sugar and all grains for nearly three years.

@megsybeth In my case I think this kind of stuff is now hated by my body.
