I understand the need for higher sodium at the initial stages of a LCHF diet, but does it need to continue?

As long as you are eating low carb you will have some increased sodium needs. It does seem to reduce in time for many people but it only takes one day of extra activity or sweating to bring on the symptoms again. Which you really want to avoid letting it get to the potassium by of symptoms because by that time you'll be losing potassium and magnesium too.
Eating low carb keeps insulin low and insulin plays a roll in sodium retention. As long as insulin is low, you'll need more sodium.
Eating keto is naturetic and increases the sodium needs even more.
