Most in this group understand we need more than the 2300 mg (2.3g) of sodium the "experts" say we should have. However, the general public doesn't understand this. Therefore, you likely have loved ones who will be scared you are killing yourself as you salt your bone broth and drink pickle juice to up your sodium intake. For that reason, I wanted to post the video below. It was posted before, but it kept being removed because it was a presentation on yet unreleased research data. Hopefully, this will stay up for a while. In addition, I am adding links to a couple of the abstracts for the studies he references which show that for the general population 3-5 g per day of sodium seems to be the healthiest levels and that going over 5 g a day is only detrimental for those who are hypertensive.

First the study links:

http://www.thelancet.com/action/showFullTextImages?pii=S0140-6736(16)30467-6

Key quotes from that one are:
In those individuals with hypertension (6835 events), sodium excretion of 7 g/day or more (7060 [11%] of population with hypertension: hazard ratio1·23 [95% CI 1·11–1·37]; p<0·0001) and less than 3 g/day (7006 [11%] of population with hypertension: 1·34 [1·23–1·47]; p<0·0001) were both associated with increased risk compared with sodium excretion of 4–5 g/day

and
higher sodium excretion was not associated with risk of the primary composite outcome (≥7 g/day in 6271 [9%] of the population without hypertension

Second study link:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28110297

Key quote from this abstract is:
Prospective cohort studies have identified the optimal range of sodium intake to reside in the moderate range (3-5 g/day), where the risk of cardiovascular disease and death is lowest.

Finally, here is the link to the video:

Note the part about sodium starts about halfway through. Although, given what he says about carbs and fats ahead of that are worth listening to as well.

    All great sources. :)

I wonder when governments are going to start changing their recommendations? I wonder how long it will take for the heart associations to change their tune?

    Their out dated woo: https://www.cdc.gov/salt/index.htm

Bump up time for this excellent thread. Newbies should be reading this stuff.

If you've been restricting your sodium, you want to increase your intake gradually, rather than suddenly, if you'd like to avoid simulating colonoscopy prep... :s
