(Off Topic, slightly) Special Powers

Apparently mine is the power to offend. Which, also apparently, I still have:

What's your 'special' power?

You should come by the Motivation & Support board Steve. It's like the GoaD old days.1

Wow! I'm still surprised by some of the stuff I see on line.
OTOH #Sad

Nicely done!
My super power is kicking people in the head.0 -

Well, I moseyed over. There are some interesting threads on that board.
In the meantime, the original thread I linked above has been edited by 'community service'. Which cracks me up because it was so tame.0 -
You are special! First I've seen or known of MFP stepping in and moderating a post (but then I don't spend a whole lot of time here). What shows today is certainly benign enough as not to offend...anyone!
My special power must have been inherited from my Mom: just being straight-forward and blunt, I guess to a fault. I don't necessarily try to offend or piss people off but it sometimes happens. Ironically, I think if people didn't try to sugar-coat everything, communication would be much more effective and efficient.

Amazing. My food bill went down $30 a month by eating more veggies and cooking from scratch. Just depends but eating prepared foods and eating out isn't cheap for me. sigh0
-
I find it hard to believe she lives in some mystical place in the US where frozen and canned vegetables are somehow triple the price that they are here. I saw they heavily edited the thread, but I gathered she has a lot more issues going on than just budgeting a healthy food bill.2

Is sarcasm a special power? Or, like minimyzeme, being straightforward and blunt to a fault?2

@countcurt At least your post wasn't deleted. I'm not sure I've ever heard of anyone trying to eat more vegetables to GAIN weight. ?????0

I guess it would depend on the vegetable and the quantity... I could imagine gaining weight by eating a lot of potatoes - being so starchy, they tend to digest pretty fast.0 -
Two posts were deleted. The first read:
"No offense, but if you can't afford enough food to maintain your weight how did you become overweight in the first place." Literally.
The second started out with: "I detect some anger". Then went on to suggest that she try going back to whatever she'd been doing before. Or consider a food pantry, if her situation were truly that dire.
They edited about half the posts in the thread. Then left the thread because it contained useful information about cost efficient food options. So, in a week or so, the thread will no longer be accessed by anybody.
When she started talking about her psych meds and her pre-medication weight and eating I realized she likely has an eating disorder. Or some other psych. diagnosis that's not minor. Hence the recommendation to see a dietician. Seems like nobody recognized the obvious clues there.1 -
Yeah, sounded pretty mild to me. vs. the old GoaD board. I wonder if the censors are people let go by WW, due to shuttering the boards?0
-
Any time I wander over into the general boards I tend to regret it for that reason. People are VERY sensitive and I'm not great at writing messages that coddle emotions. I got a good laugh out of your post asking how she got overweight in the first place if she couldn't afford food1

I read thru the thread on the weekend. The woman seems to have some significant issues. I agree it was pretty mild for GoaDiness.1

Setting aside all the ED issues the woman apparently has, I'm still trying to figure out how medication alone can cause weight gain (not talking about potential fluid retention) without an increase in food intake.
A dear friend who had to go on medications for his bi-polar did gain significant weight but that was due to the significant increase in polishing off big bags of potato chips.0 -

From what I've seen it's usually that the meds increase the hunger signals, or decrease the activity levels, and that causes the weight gain. I have heard of some hormone therapies causing water weight gain, and some thyroid meds causing actual metabolism changes.0 -
My daughter has three different immuno-deficiency conditions, including Celiac's (diagnosed) and Hashimoto's (diagnosed). The medication greatly affected her metabolism, and she gained significant weight.0

Thanks @bmwalone & @misterhub - your responses do make sense. I think what had stuck with me is that the woman in that posting claimed she was only eating 200 calories at one point (not even enough food to maintain any adult's weight) and was given the medication to gain weight. I certainly can appreciate that certain medications can alter metabolism and/or stimulate appetite.0
