One of the things drs. often bring up against eating keto is the probability of gout from all that protein. This blog addresses the real cause of gout, fructose consumption. The blogger got this info from Gary Taubes, who did the research. I found it interesting because I have had gout like pain in my toes before I switched to Keto/LCHF, not since doing that however.

Interesting read. I am prone to attacks since gout runs on my Father's side of the family. That being said I haven't noticed any problems since going LCHF and losing weight. What is funny is my last PCP told me that I would have gouty attacks if I remained overweight and also in the process of losing weight which hasn't been the case. He is not my PCP anymore which is a good thing since he was a pill pusher. I think if you are lessening the stress on your joints and eating things that help with joint health then your risk of an attack goes down. I may always have some risk of an attack no matter how well I eat or in shape I get but so far LCHF hasn't posed a problem which seems in line with the articles. I still keep organic frozen tart cherries (for some reason they work for me) on hand since they help mitigate an attack if I catch it early.

My coworker suffers from gout. One thing he found from when he was low carb/keto versus a lower fat diet program he alternates with is that even on the lower fat protocol, if he does not include coconut oil - even keeping 95% of his dietary intake similar - he'll get bad gout flares.

Something, FOR HIM, mitigates the various impacts when he consumes coconut oil regularly... I haven't researched enough to see if this is common.

Just a ramble: Too much beer. Too much fructose. Too much protein. Effects some. Not others. We are all different. Thanks for the articles though. Always good to have the info stored in the back of my brain, if needed. Gout. Common 1st sign is joint pain in big toe (extremities).

I know of 1 person who has had gout. I wouldn't describe him as being excessive in any of the three so maybe it was a combination of all three. Maybe it was just his particular biological make up. I also recall one evening I had a burning kind of pain in my left big toe and it was about the same time he was dealing with his gout so gout came to mind. Mine subsided with no intervention but it was rather strange. Never returned. Knock on wood. It happened to occur when I was eating Medically Therapeutic Ketogenic so neither protein nor fructose intake was high. Both were quite low, in fact. Couldn't be alcohol since I don't partake.

I will second the idea of the tart cherry juice though. His doc told him to drink dark cherry juice so he purchased some Knudsen's Just Cherries. I think that is what it is called. Or perhaps it was for his arthritic knees. Which ever. He now turns to dark cherry juice when needed. I've read dark cherry juice is good for a lot of ailments.

Just wanted to contribute this helpful link which does a good job of explaining why tart cherries and tart cherry juice help with gout (about halfway down the article):

Just throwing this one in, my husband started with gout when we lived in China. Unlike other places we've lived they did actual blood tests, told him he was allergic to Beer, Shrimp & Prawns, Liver and Tofu. He cut them out, the gout went and any time he had an attack in the early 'getting used to it' days, we could work it back to something specific he'd eaten eg once a steak when they'd grilled prawns on the same grill, or some one had added fish sauce to a dish. So it may be weird but it has worked for him for 10 years!
