Today's topic: Starchy Vegetables,
(1) It is about that time of the year for holiday meals. How do you feel about or incorporate “starchy vegetables” in your in meals?
(2) With looking at nutritional values do you feel too much starchy vegetables effect weight loss?
(1) I have potatoes often with my meals ,cooked, baked or mashed. I do eat peas and corn a few times a week.
(2) I calculate the point values for them.

I love starchy vegetables. I think they're filling and a great source for both macro and micro nutrients. Squash is my favorite out of the starchy veggies. I make wicked good Butternut Squash Soup, Baked Pizza Spaghetti Squash, and Chicken Wild Rice Stuffed Acorn Squash.
I also really enjoy potatoes. This week, they are the topping of my Shepherd's Pie. I also love Sweet Potatoes in everything, but I also like them for breakfast topped with peanut butter (don't diss it until you try it).
I didn't get fat eating too many non-fried starchy vegetables (I think most people would agree). I track the calories for them as I do everything else and cook with them to my heart's content1 -
I also love starchy vegetables and for the most part get them through potatoes. Not so many beans however. Beans are a good source of starch and some are good protein. My dietitian recommends around 50% of my diet come from carbohydrates so I do get plenty of starch. I have to really watch the intake however because I can get to much in a real hurry bringing on weight gain.
By in large I do incorporate starchy vegetables on a regular basis. I love 99 % of any vegetable out there including brussel sprouts which we've had some interesting discussions on this board.0 -
I enjoy potatoes. Baked with a little bit of olive oil, salt, and pepper is great with a good piece of meat or chopped up and mixed in with my morning eggs. Corn on the cob is also pretty awesome in the summer! I'm good with eating it just plain.
I'll make a side of roasted baby red potatoes to serve with our Thanksgiving turkey. I try to make enough so that I have leftovers.0 -
I think starchy vegetables got a bad rap long ago.. and for some reason that reputation still lingers. But, like anything, I believe it is the portions, not the food that creates the problem. For me, literally NOTHING is off the table as far as foods go.. just my portions and approach are now different.
I eat potatoes, squash, beans, lentils, I adore corn - bring it all on!

I have ham & eggs for lunch about 2X per week. This is home fries or grits country. Home fries for me thanks. I leave about 1/3 on the plate.
Place around the corner has a great catch & cook. Sweet potato fries is a pick for a side. About 1X per month.
When losing I recall a loaded baked potato was one of my regular meals. Don't recall the specifics.0 -
Yep, I love white and sweet potatoes, and all sorts of peas and beans thanks to my parents southern roots. And I track as well.0

Really love roasting cut up Yukon Gold potatoes with olive oil salt pepper and a little garlic powder.1

Yep - one of my favorites too - we use fresh garlic though.0 -
Count me in as one who likes them too, though I mix my veggie choices liberally. I didn't grow up in a meat and potatoes household so the starchy veggies are definitely part of a bigger palette.
I too don't panic or avoid them. I'm more mindful of serving sizes but just tally the points like anything else and keep moving.1 -
Yeah I think IF you move enough daily it is mostly a nonissue. I don't eat pasta except rarely but don't turn down a small potato or squash etc. I like colored sweet potatoes too (also called "yams" by some americans) and ate them last night. Points are just points for me.1
