Today Topic: How often did you weigh yourself BEFORE joining WW?
Did you want to know how much you weighed if you were not trying to lose?

@beachwoman2006 MamaCindy’s Post today re daily vs weekly WI made me think of how I NEVER weighed myself before joining WW.

I only stepped on Scale at Dr’s office. I never weighed myself if I was not on a “diet”. I never knew when I passed from 199 to 200+. My many many times joining WW were pretty short lived and after I had lost X Lbs I would quit and I would not weigh myself again until the next time I joined.

My clothes were what told me I was getting bigger not the scale.

While gaining I weighed several times per week.

Drill would go like this. Morning after a major blowout, hit the scale. Say up 1 lb. Not so bad. Keep myself in check today. Next day back to "normal". Weigh again, maybe that 1lb is gone. Pour on a little more. Skip the scale a couple of days. Then 3lbs just appear out of nowhere.

Despite my best attempt to wish them into the cornfield, these lbs stick around. Repeat...

I think we've been daily weighers since WW in 1978. Had to upgrade the scale when I went over 300#.

I had a hit and miss behavior before WW. I then weighed daily while losing until my scale died. I bought a new great scale (same as what the meetings use) on sale just before reaching goal and weigh daily.

I actually weighed pretty much everyday prior to WW that's when I hit the 400.8 lbs and made the decision. I've been doing it ever since. Still doing it and yes it does drive me nuts sometimes.

    Thanks @Jimb376mfp ; good question.

Short answer for me is: never. I got inklings of how much I weighed from my pants size (going up and up). Of course I knew I was getting bigger but my denial was reinforced by lack of scale data. Let's have another round...

I weighed when I went to the doctor's office (which was rare)--never at any other time in recent memory. I really had no idea how much I needed to lose when I started WW. My doc's advice shortly before doing so had been to lose five pounds. I think that simple way to start taking control of my situation was really a helpful catalyst. It wasn't until I was on WW for several weeks that I peeked into my numbers and realized how far I had to go to be somewhat healthy weight-wise.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

    This is a good question!

Probably since I was a teenager, I've gone through extended periods of weighing myself every day then getting frustrated with the scale and stopping. When I'd finally get back on the scale I'd be dismayed to find that my weight had gone up significantly. I really could deceive myself about how my clothes were fitting.

I have been on a consistent streak of weighing (when I was home and not traveling) since 2002. I've been using the Happy Scale app since 2013 which I find very useful since I can focus on trends instead of the sometimes random ups and downs I see especially when I do long endurance activities in the summer.

    Kim, YW.
When you put out the call for November LTL volunteers you may put me down for Friday.

That river (Da Nile) is a strong force, I may develop a LTL question around it!

"...of course I knew I was getting bigger but my denial was reinforced by lack of scale data." I lived a LOT of my life in that "river"!

I didn't even own a scale until I rejoined WW in 2002. The only time I weighed was when I went to the doctor. I was already a lifetime member of WW (reached goal the first time in the early 70's and then goal and lifetime in 1993) so I guess I thought that I would never gain weight again. I mean it wasn't like I hadn't NOTICED that I was buying bigger sizes, but denial...

Beginning with my yearly physical in1997, my weight was up "a little" every year. And every year I told the doctor (and myself) "I'll get it back down before I see you next year." Finally, in October 2002 I needed to have surgery (a minor surgery, but anesthesia nonetheless). When I went in for my pre-op lab work and physical, my weight was the highest it had been since 1990. I made the decision right then that I would re-join WW as soon as I had recovered from surgery.

I re-joined WW one week before Thanksgiving hoping to not GAIN any weight between then and New Years. I left my weigh-in book with the receptionist and told her that I didn't want to know my weight OR whether I had lost or gained until the first meeting in January. I just made myself a promise that I would do the best I could do through the holidays.

Imagine my surprise (more like shock) at that first weigh-in in January when I saw that I had lost 10 pounds!

While I was attending meetings, I only weighed at the meeting. It was only after I reached goal (again) that I became a daily weigher.
