We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.
This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!
Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for December are:
Monday - 88olds
Tuesday - goldenfrisbee
Wednesday - minimyzeme (Kim)
Thursday - imastar2 (Derrick)
Friday - bwmalone
Today's topic: What is one thing you are going to do today to move towards your goal or stay at your goal.

I only get one? Dang it!
The number one thing I'm doing is to be mindful of my eating - especially portions, as treats surround me every turn. The house is full of holiday treats (just look at my log lately!)... there is an ever-present pantry full of snacks at work.... special meals seem to be lurking around every corner this year.
Be mindful - decide what to eat before I am in front of the food, take what I planned on eating in a measured portion. Sit and ENJOY it, rather than just inhale it.0 -
I like what Kim @minimyzeme says often in his posts: "one day at a time" or something like that. I'm thinking about that because last week I started to feel rather poorly in the morning after drinking my first 24 oz. of coffee. It kept up all week and so I decided to try going without to see how I would feel.
Now I've been drinking coffee quite heavily and daily for at least 35 years so this is kind of a big deal. Yesterday I had massive headaches but the unpleasant feeling in my upper chest had subsided. Headaches continued this morning, and a little bit of vertigo. Yesterday I didn't drink coffee and today I'm not drinking coffee. That is all the further I am thinking ahead. I'm not saying I'm giving up coffee, just trying to see how I feel without it once the side affects of no caffeine diminish.
That made me think about this weight loss journey we are all on. What I want to do is just think about today and tracking today, and not looking down the long road ahead. After all, I'm going to have to travel that same road with or without mindfulness.
That is what I am going to do today.

Been in the hospital with the wife for 5 day's being very sick and battling stage 5 kidney disease. she needs to control her high blood pressure and diabetes so given all that I do need to be sure I eat healthy to support her needs which is strict portion control, watching carbs and sodium intake. This is the way I am moving forward.1

Today was the annual holiday potluck at work.
I had a healthy, satisfying breakfast and lunch as I normally do.
I walked passed the goody tables multiple times, and nothing was
tempting. Just keep swimming...1 -

Well, I have the benefit of "today" being yesterday so I can tell you what I did; not what I was going to do--there is a difference!
I've been walking about three miles on a nearby (relatively) low-traffic road since late-spring / early summer. The ~hour it takes is doable for me in that I can let go of all the thoughts in my head about what I "should be" doing and just focus on the walk. 95% of the time, the dog goes with and it's a nice way to clear my head and get a little exercise.
Yesterday was snowy here all day. By the time I got to be able to walk, it was late-afternoon and snowfall rates were probably about two inches/hour. Anyway, the road was not a safe place to walk and the dog wasn't going. I did a walk here on my and the neighbor's property through woods and fields. The snow was knee-deep+ in many places where it had drifted. I went about a mile and a half over the course of an hour.
It wasn't exercise pace and it broke no records, but it beat the hell out of sitting inside looking out at it. Then I went home and cleared the driveway for the second time before the better part of a foot more fell overnight...1 -
@Jerdtrmndone - praying for you and your wife.
Late night at work Monday and the need the be in earlier to work on Tuesday cut into my exercise time but I did fit in 24 minutes of run/walk on the treadmill.0 -
So sorry to hear about your wife Jertmndone. Ts and Ps for sure. I walk 4.7 mi most days and always do some moving. Helps keep me at goal.0
