We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.
This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!
Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for December are:

Today's topic: How do you handle eating to satisfaction instead of eating till your full or even stuffed.? Do you tell yourself your satisfied? or eat off a small plate or just eat less.? Will the new WW plan alter your thinking in this area? Do you wake up hungry if you eat to satisfaction?

For me it is far from intuitive. I tracked everything for a year at lifetime before morphing to simply filling. I eat on small plates and habits have helped with putting right amount on plate. I recognize most restaurants serve enough for two to four people. I usually split entrees. I know when I am overstuffed but satisfaction is a much lower target.
My wife wakes up hungry. I never do . We are different that way.0 -
My ability to deceive myself about how much I am eating requires that I weigh/measure whenever feasible. And track. Even with portion control, I could still easily eat more in a day than I need if I didn't track it.
It is a very rare morning when I don't wake up hungry. The few times that has happened usually have involved a very late meal (I don't eat late in the day and I go to bed early) or I ate something that disagreed with me.
My husband is like @podkey as he never wakes up hungry. He could easily go until noon or 1pm before eating. He made the mistake on Thanksgiving day of just having a taste of something he was preparing and that turned on his hunger in a big way. We didn't eat dinner until after 2pm that day.0 -

Eating to satisfaction is a work in progress for me. Part of my left handed brain or my youth and young adult I now call T-Bone wants me to eat till I'm full or stuffed. My eyes look at a half cup of potatoes and T-bone says is that all there is. I have to either ignore him or just tell myself I will be satisfied with the portions I have put on my plate. Ye this is a mind game. I don't eat off small plates b/c I don't own any and when I go out to eat there aren't any there as well. So the remedy for me is to eat less and move on. Give it time to settle to the bottom and then I can say I really am satisfied. So developing this habit is quite the chore. So it is indeed difficult to change the older I have become.

I still use my food scale a lot. A least once a day. So far today I weighed how much oatmeal I took out of the pot at breakfast, and how much ham I put on my sandwich at lunch time.
Early on I came to view this sort of portion monitoring as a two way street. It not only keeps my portions from being too large, but also keeps me from skimping out of fear of going over. Remain surprised by how much I can eat in a day and not gain.1 -
It took me a long time to "calibrate my eyeballs" to dish out portions that would be satisfying without stuffing myself.... I don't always get it right 100% of the time, but most of the time I get it right.
Here's what I do.
I use small plates. If I have to get up to get more, it makes me THINK about if I really need it or not.
I aim for 50% as much as I think I want... I know that if I just throw food at the plate while thinking about how hungry I am, I will overfill it... so I put 1/2 as much as I want.
I eat the bulk first or at least faster than I eat the dense foods... Eat the salad and veggies first, then eat the steak after, as example.
If after eating my portion, if I am still hungry, I drink some water and wait a few minutes... If I'm still hungry, I go get a small portion. No guilt. No ruminations - just do it... I already portioned 50%, I already waited.. I already drank... so it's really hunger, and it's OK to eat!
Yes, i weigh my food sometimes... but not always. Usually I only weigh foods that are tricky to portion.. like peanut butter. Hard to guess how much is on a piece of bread for my sandwich.0 -

Most of what I eat, I've been eating with full tracking on the SP plan so I'm pretty familiar with what serving sizes I've been using to manage my weight. Those amounts are satisfying but not stuffing. Over the last few years, I've also trained myself to be much more mindful around food. By doing so, I'm more likely to know when to stop than I ever used to be. Lastly, anymore, I really don't enjoy feeling stuffed so I have good incentive not to eat to that point.
I've appreciated the flexibility of the new plan. I've generally bumped serving sizes of the (now) 0-point foods up just a little. This has allowed me to expand or consider options for the point-bearing foods. I think on average, I'm eating a little more but feel like there is a little more freedom of timing and choice but because I can be a little more 'creative' with the pointy stuff.
The change is not huge for me, but noticeable. I feel like I can distribute my points a little differently. I find that includes a little more protein 3-4 hours after dinner. I have noticed that I actually wake up less 'hungry' than on the traditional Smart Points program.0 -

I give myself a modest serving and don't eat seconds. This often results in 4 smallish meals or 3 eaten by 4 p.m. Either works ok for me. I'm usually hungrier early in the day then later.
Do you tell yourself your satisfied?
Nope. I just eat the small serving.
or eat off a small plate or just eat less.? Always eat off a small or medium plate, and yes, eat less.
Will the new WW plan alter your thinking in this area? No, it just makes me want to eat more 0 SP foods in case i want more later. Nice to have points for sauces or a dessert, or to roll over for an event.
Do wake up hungry if you eat to satisfaction? I do sometimes, usually if my last meal the day before is early or especially light. But not always the case. Last night at 6:30, I had 3 - 6" corn tortillas with chicken & enchilada sauce, side of zucchini. I was stuffed. This morning, im starving. I did have 9 points left, but still, sometimes I just don't get it.0 -
Yeah guilty as charged in being similar in hunger to gadgetgirlIL's DH. I have even forgotten to eat breakfast and lunch on very rare occasion and wasn't that hungry. I have found I do slightly better eating something in the morning usually around 9 am or about 3-4 hours after awakening and I have eaten an early lunch by habit at around 11 am or so. Not sure how late is late for eating. I would be fine eating an early supper but DW is usually not ready until close to 7 pm when Jeopardy comes on.
My DW could eat at 9pm and still be hungry in morning for sure. Interesting how we are all so different. I am also more of an endurance guy than a sprinter type by body type and nature. I think I just store rather large amounts of glycogen to even out the blood sugar.
Supposedly moving (AKA let's say 10,000 steps or equivalent) helps even out blood sugar and prevents blood glucose spiking. Pretty sure that wouldn't cure my DW being hungry in the morning though.0 -
@podkey - I think you have a good sense of how much activity I get. It has never cured me of being hungry in the morning. Sometimes after a day of hiking or biking, I end up hungry in the middle of the night to the point that I can't sleep and have to get up and have a small snack in order to get back to sleep.
My DH is pretty much a couch potato unlike you. Ah, the mysteries of the human body!0 -
Great discussion to all thanks for the input.
