I still want to know where 2017 went!
I had intended to start the year off with a fast, but I forgot until after I had a brownie for breakfast.
I hope everyone has a great year. Welcome to anyone new that is just starting out, and welcome back to those of us that are recommitting.
Have a great day and happy fasting!1 -
Thanks Kate!! And thanks also for letting me know I could restart my streak! I logged in later last night only to find that I was on day 295! I thought not logging in was suppose to cancel things, well in any case, I figured it out, changed my log in days to 1 and here I am on day 2 on January 2nd! I feel reborn!! K, that’s pushing it...
Yesterday I was over what I wanted to be but I planned on a steak dinner with wine, so there ya go... but I did log which is what I wanted to do so my log in streak was honest, so, yeah me
Nice border/header above for the new year too!! Thank you.
I’m taking my stock & leftover turkey out of the freezer today and making soup! I’m planning on a fast day today. Kate I hear ya on the brownie for breakfast! All through the holidays I’ve had butter tarts for breakfast!!
Happy New Year to new friends and ones that don’t come here anymore... I’m referring to you @flossyruby1 and you @flumi_f !! Hope we all are successful at our own brand of healthy living.... cheers!~mama1 -
Good morning everybody!!
Thanks for starting the thread yesterday Kate! We were knee deep in driving back to CT, from Boston, MA.
Totally need to get back on track from the dinners out during vacation and NYE and all the cheese I ate the night of 12/31!
LOL Today is a much needed Light Day WOO HOO! Let's do this guys! 2018 is here! YES where in the world did 2017 go??!!
First day back in the office today after being gone for almost two weeks. So need to keep this short for now.
Planning on going to the gym tonight after work, otherwise typical light day here. Next one planned for Thursday.
I will try and check back later. Have a great day!2 -
Hey, y'all! My first college class officially started today! And I go back to work tomorrow. It is going to be a wild week! I am going to get a fast in at some point, just not sure which day, yet. Might end up being Saturday.
@mamainthekitchen Glad I could help. It is inspiring to restart your streak!
@Meghan509 Glad you made it back! I hear you with the cheese. I can't keep it in the house.
Have a great week! Happy fasting!0 -
Valter Longo ( the longevity researcher that Dr. Mosley consulted with) has a book out today https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B073YMYX7H?storeType=ebooks
I’m just starting to read it but my understanding is he recommends a fast (4-5 days) or ‘fast mimicking diet’ every few months or so. I’m thinking of trying it to finish up January. I’ll let you know what I think of the book.
Light day today- homemade soup and some coleslaw. Today was one of the easier fast days, thank heavens.
Wishing everyone well!

Hi everybody!
Funny how when it is a short week, it can be a crazy one! Everybody is catching up from the break. Ugh!
In any case, yesterday's Light Day went well! And we were pleasantly surprised that every single New Years Resolution peep did not show up at the gym lastnight! :O Sorry, not trying to throw shade at people who are trying to get healthier and exercise. I just get frustrated when they don't stick around for more than a month or so... Which is what tends to happen this time of year. January gets busy and it is hard to find the machines you like, then it thins back out again. Sigh... patience.
Today is a regular day. We bought some nice fresh turkey last night for our sandwiches. Going to have some left over taco pasta crockpot yummies that we had leftover in our freezer for dinner tonight. Tomorrow will light day number 2.
We are scheduled for snow tomorrow here on the east coast, US. Heard various amounts of 1 to 3 inches or 3 to 6 inches depending on how far east it goes. Waiting to see if I will be at work, or remote or taking the train in. Who knows. I do have AWD, but I don't want to put myself at risk. That is not smart. It is also VERY cold here. Much colder than we are used to. This time of year is typically in the 40's F, that is a typical winter here. Lately it has been in the teens! Right now it is 20 degrees F. No fun! Definitely not in FL anymore!
Thanks for that book link Rye! Sounds interesting and will check it out.
Good luck with school and work Kate! Going back to school is exciting! So happy for you!!
Hope that soup turned out awesome mama! YUM!
Have a good day all.0 -
It was a good light day yesterday, and I’m plugging through the Longevity Diet book. The recommendation of a pescatarian diet won’t work for me (I have never ever been able to stand the smell or taste of fish/seafood, and unfortunately I do not see any recommendation for alternatives to fish.) Aren’t there people with fish allergies?
But, the Five day fast, or fast mimicking diet once every couple of months has me VERY intrigued. All five days are higher in calories than our light days, so I’m thinking it should be doable. I was thinking later this month, but maybe I could take it on next week.
I have officially upped my calories to maintenance! I’m 7-8 pounds above my goal (144) and my statistics suggest such a LOW calorie allotment compared to the calculators or even my Apple Watch that I think quite a bit of trial and error will be necessary. So to start I’m going to put my five days calories at 1630 and continue to ignore exercise calories. I’ll reassess after 1 month (sooner if I see any weight gain). If my calculations based on statistics are correct I should lose about 2 pounds a month eating that way. If that is the case, I’ll up my calories by a small percentage of the exercise calories and see where that gets me.
This is earlier and heavier than I was anticipating but I think I’m looking OK. And since the lower my weight, the lower my allotment of calories will be: well that is just incentive to set my weight at the top of normal BMI, not lower. But everything is negotiable and constantly changing, so who knows.
I will NOT be changing up my exercise. Strength/weights 2-3 times a week. Swim 2-3 times a week (1.5 hour weekly minimum) light Exercycle/walk/dance or something for 30 minutes every day I don’t swim. HIIT 2-3 times a week (Exercycle or rebounder). This is minimum I commit to. Swimming depending upon pool open/closures and my schedule but if I don’t get swim in I’m going to have some substitute.
I’m pretty sure this is a decent healthy non weight gain (hopefully slow weight loss) plan when I combine it with 5:2. I guess I will see.
Stay warm folks!!!

Hi Ryenday - I'm also a swimmer.... or I was until Labor Day. I quit my gym in the spring, swam outdoors all summer but now I need to rejoin a gym because I've gained 8 pounds since Labor Day. Trying to get motivated. Add me as a friend and maybe we can help motivate each other. BTW, I've tried the 5/2. I can do it for a week but have never successfully gotten to a second week.0

Hi my 5:2 peeps! Hope you all had a great holiday break. Ours involved a lot of great food. I am back and ready to kick some more blubber butt. Who's with me? Let's make 2018 the year we reach our goal weight!!!
I started back on 5:2 this past Tuesday. I will do my first fast day tomorrow (Thursday). I am a bit nervous but looking forward to getting back into the 5:2 rhythm. Hoping to get to my goal weight, 145, by my birthday, April 5th.
Looking forward to another season of 5:2 with you all.2 -
Morning everyone! Welcome @m0nster2 stick with it, you’ll get support here!!
Blubber butt!! Funny jk! But I’m with you! I’m happy to feel like I’m starting over again instead of stuck!
I just now logged yesterday’s lunch out! Luckily mfp has the restaurants menu entered.... I ordered fish & chips but subbed the side garden salad for the fries, had a fantastic get together and chatted all afternoon!! I just wasn’t hungry for dinner by the time I got home and there were tons of leftovers for hubs & son, daughter at school late, so I had a glass of wine and a few almonds and figured a small bowl of soup later would be fine. Well. I started not feeling well.... so no soup, and I’m still feeling gross so a little hot water & apple cider vinegar to start my day but honestly I feel so sick! Im hoping it’s the fish and not the nasty flu going around town!!!’ And I had a flu shot!!
Ryenday your workout schedule is fantastic!! You have inspiring dedication! I’ve also listened to podcasts about long fasting periods, but I can’t bring myself to do one. I just feel that our bodies were meant to digest something not nothing so I have a hard time wrapping my head around it but the podcasts have been very interesting!
Have a great day people I think I may lay down on the floor now..........!!!!0 -
Hi all!
Checking in from snowy CT! Working from home today, thanks to the six to ten inches of snow that is due to hit during the day today!
We got an email from our gym last night they were maybe planning to open at 2pm this afternoon. I guess that is depending on what happens with the storm. They said they will also announce that they will not open at that time. So we shall see about a workout tonight. I am thinking it is not going to happen. So Light day at home with no workout. I am not a big fan but nothing I can do about it... Mother nature is in charge today! Got to stay safe and warm!
Got to say congrats to @ryenday for being so close to goal! You have rocked the last few months! The weight has really come off and I am so happy for you! WTG! You got this! WOO HOO!
As far as the seafood thing, I can't say I have any issue with it. I flipping LOVE anything that swims. But, I can see why people don't like it, and A LOT of people don't. Don't stress. Find and stick with what works for you.
@m0nster2 welcome! I have added you as a friend because I hope to encourage you to stick with 5/2. YOU CAN DO IT. Plan ahead and take it one week at a time. Find some recipes that you like and make them for yourself on your light days and stick to it. There are a ton of great recipes here on this Board. That is what has helped me stick with it since March of 2017. That an adding some exercise and having some free meals on the weekends has helped me stick to it 100% during the week. No saying that free meals work for everybody, but they do for me. Good luck!
@jknight001 amen sister with the holiday food eating! Nice to be back on track. Your goal sounds great! I am right behind you. My birthday is in May and I would love to be at goal by then. If I am at 167 (before the holidays) and I think I want to get to 135 then I have 32 pounds to go. I could hopefully be there before May if all goes well. Let's do this!
@mamainthekitchen I hope you are not coming down with something! Feel better. Get some rest. Ugh. No fun! But, your dinner out does sound lovely.
Okay all, I am going to get back to doing some work. See you all again soon!1 -
@m0nster2 there is a group for Us swimmers called Swimmers! It is pretty active and you should check it out!
@mamainthekitchen I hope you feel better! The FMD (fast mimicking diet) part of Longo’s longevity recommendations is actually a day at 1100 cals, then 4 days at 800 cals and then a carefully planned reintro to regular eating day. The specifics of what and how much macronutrients to eat are detailed tho. I’m VERY intrigued and interested and may try to do it next week. One would do this FMD every few months.
@jknight001 mid March birthday here and it would be so nice to be Goal 144 weight by then but I’m no longer gonna sweat it. Sticking to 5:2 and exercise and going to try a FMD soon, but moving myself to maintenance or VERY slow weight loss now. I’m at 152 and don’t look fat and slobby like I did - and really myself and my husband are the only people I need to impress. I’m at a healthy place if you going by measurements like waist circumference to height, by body fat percentage (caliper method) so I’ll take my time bringing BMI into place.
@Meghan509 I bet the temperature was a system shock! We are reeling down here with temperatures in in the low teans at night early this week, but this weekend is forecast for highs in the sixties!
Light day today: coleslaw and soup again.
Cin Cin a tutti

@m0nster2 Welcome (back?) to the group. I would echo what everyone else has been saying. There is lots of support here including all the recipes @Meghan509 mentioned. I would add to just take things one day at a time. It can get overwhelming to think of doing this for awhile. Also as your body adjusts and you create some favorite fast day meals, it gets easier. It becomes just part of the normal weekly routine. As you lose weight, you will feel better and that helps too. Feel free to post any questions you might have.
@ryenday It is possible for you to hit your goal by mid-March but you have such a great attitude about it all that it seems like it is more about the journey than what the scale says. Hope you will report back on your FMD experience. Very interested in what you think about it. My friend is severely allergic to shrimp. I am guessing there is at least one person on the planet allergic to any item you can think of.
@mamainthekitchen I think I should change my username to mamachainedtothesinkbydishes since it more accurately describes me. Hope you are feeling better real soon. Probably a toss up as to whether food poisoning or the flu is worse.2 -
Forgot and used one of my Samsung emojis which made MFP lose it. Here is the rest of my post.
@Meghan509 YES! Let's do this. I think you can make your goal by your birthday. We will have a big virtual celebration then! How about your guy? How is he doing? I have heard the storm is a big one. How nice you can work from home. If you have a decent size house you can run through the house for exercise or if you have stairs even better. My husband and 9yo son will run a circle that is made with the kitchen and dining room if they can't do it outside.
Well, better get back to my day. Hope yours is a good one.

Good morning everybody!
Crazy AM here! Managed to dig out and get to work today with no issues. Phew. The highway was pretty much empty this morning because the schools were all closed again. Made it to work in less than 15 minutes. Woo hoo! Only problem is I got slammed with a bunch of work when I got here. *screams* All good. Happy to be employed...
Hopped on the scale this morning. First time since before the holidays. I am up about two pounds. That's okay. Not a biggie. Tons of meals out and Mom's desserts will do it. Off of our typical gym and eating schedule, blah blah blah. Time of the month, less exercise, more eating, short week, etc. Planning to be back with a full week on track for next week. Not going to sweat it.
@ryenday yes the temp back here in CT was quite a shock to the system compared to beautiful Florida! It was sunny and 80's the whole time we were there (though Mom said they are having a cold spell) and when we flew back it was a balmy 20 degrees. LOL It dipped lower since then here, and it will be in the teens this weekend. Boo... You know it is bad when you see it is supposed to be in the 40's next week and you get excited!
@jknight001 thanks, yes we can do it! Spring will be here and we will be bathing suit ready! Woo hoo! LOL Our place is a little small for running around but that's okay we made the best of it! Thank you for asking about my guy. He has been dealing with a bit of an up and down issue lately. Had hit a nice low before the holidays then had been hungry and nibbling on trail mix and stuff (his own admission) and he is now back on track. His body tends to react badly with salt. If he has it, then he can GAIN like mad then lose it again the next weigh in. So strange! No trail mix in the house for 2018 for a while LOL.
Alrighty gang, I am going to get back to doing a few things here. Going to have a nice cup of green tea to try to avoid eating lunch for a bit. Getting hungry! Have a nice day and I will hopefully check back later.

Gooood morning! Boy do I feel better... a long afternoon nap and a walk in the rain then soup for dinner and early to bed.... I actually enjoy a little food poisoning! Unless my body just doesn’t like deep fried foods which I’m not really used to, the fish tasted delish and the batter light crispy and not heavy at all. Thanks for the thoughts!! I could feel the healing energy
The news last night showed New York’s weather and east coast of Canada! Holy cow! Over here (we’re fine cause I’m on the coast so we get the rain) but further inland in our ‘valley’ they’ve had freezing rain and it’s 3” thick over everything including road signs and transmission cables, bridge structures etc so reports now are about the desperate attempt by road crews to remove that because it’s falling off and smashing onto cars!!!! Crazy weather for sure!!! Glad you made it into work safely Meghan... be careful going back home!
I’m sticking to a light round of meals today because of my delicate tummy still so I’m just using it my advantage. I’ll walk the dog too but I haven’t been for a walk on my own since last week, I’ll just see how I feel.
Being Friday I suppose no one is fasting, so enjoy a regular food day people!
Oh and ryenday... while horizontal yesterday I read up a bit more of your fasting mimicking... I’ll be very interested to hear about your experience!!
Yes JK you’re hilarious... chained to the dishes is definitely a mutual feeling and also an accurate name! Ha!

Weighed in today. I suspected I would be up when I took my measurements and all were a half inch greater than before the holidays. I was up 2.6 lbs. (1.18 kg). I was glad it wasn't more with all of the holiday goodies I consumed. Back on track this week. Did TDEE Tues and Wed. Fast on Thursday. Plan to be on the regular 5:2 schedule from now on. Looking forward to more losses.
@meghan509 Looks like you left FL just in time. Sounds like they are getting slammed by the storm as well. Although, it is probably still warmer than what you are experiencing now. That is the thing about the guys. Even if they have a weight issue, they don't have it like the ladies. They can lose just by wishing it so, or so it seems. We women have to fight for every pound. But like they say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger!
@mamainthekitchen So glad you are on the mend. Hope your family is doting on you a bit.
Have a great weekend all if I don't check in before. (My name is Julie and I am a recovering emoji addict).0 -
My husband isn’t on board with a FMD week (for me - he wants me to check with a medical dr, but we are not scheduled for yearly check ups til October and can’t afford to waste 150 dollars or more on an opinion likely to be less well informed than my own,) so I’m going to work on him. I’d love to do it next week but need his support.
I tend to jump quickly, iirc, I made the decision to try 5:2 two days before I started. I seem to behave methodically on impulse. I’m a puzzle for sure!
Wishing all a great weekend!0 -
Hi all can I join your group for motivation I want to give 5 2 diet a really good go this year and stick to it. I be grateful of hearing your weight loss stories and any tips. Claire xx3
-
@ryenday While it is frustrating to wait, it is wonderful that your husband cares enough about you to want to make sure this is healthy for you. Do you you think your doctor might consult with you and your husband for free by phone or email? At the very least you can present your findings to your husband and he might concur. Maybe he will even test it out with you since, I believe, FMD is primarily for health benefits and not weight loss. Wishing you the best in your journey.
@cdurston50523 We would love to have you join us! I would recommend, if you haven't done so already, to watch the Mosely documentary at the top of our group page just so you get the background and information on the 5:2 plan. And also check out the fast day recipes so that you have a plan for your fast days. Feel free to post any questions you might have to the group. We are a friendly bunch and will do our best to help you. Good to have you join us.0 -
I married a very special man. No one in the world but he could put up with me. Of course, ain’t nobody but me that would put up with him... lol. Seriously tho, yes, I am so fortunate. I can not imagine a better mate.
With some ground rules in place it looks like this almost fast may be a go. I’m hoping it to start tomorrow.2 -
That's great thank you I seen the documentary I 've tried 5 2 a few times and crumbled in the nights. I will give it a good go this time. X2
-
Hi all!
Sorry I didn't get here yesterday.
Been dealing with a bit of a cold and the bitter New England cold.
We were unable to get to the gym yesterday and now that is is 12:30pm and still 7 degrees, not sure about today. Ugh...
Definitely will be fasting tomorrow. Got some cooking done yesterday for the week. Just have to make our salad. Tomorrow should be warmer and it will warm up this week. Thank God.
Thinner girl problems means my warmer pjs are three sizes too big.
Welcome to our new person!
See you soon. Meg0 -
Hey, everyone! Last week wasn't a total bust! I lost one whole pound! Not gonna lie, it was all water weight.
I have 42 weeks untily birthday, and 40 pounds to lose... probably won't make it by then, but I WILL be closer!
Tomorrow will be a pretty easy fast day, I will be on the run all day and no time to eat.
I hope you all had a great weekend! Welcome to the new folks! Happy fasting!1 -
@meghan509 - Well since we all have problems in life, PJs three sizes too big is a good one. So much better than three sizes too small.
@KateNkognito - Want don't we just say 20lbs by your birthday is a BIG win! And if you do more than that then you are crushing it, girl!1
