Living the Lifestyle Monday January 15

We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for January are:

Monday - GadgetGirlIL (Regina)
Tuesday - 88olds (George)
Wednesday - Beachwoman2006 (Cindy)
Thursday - Imastar2 (Derrick)
Friday - Jimb376mfp (Jim)

Today's Topic: Starve a cold, feed a fever?

How is cold and flu season affecting the area you live in? Hopefully you have avoided becoming ill. But if you do become ill, are there any foods, beverages, or other remedies that help ease the discomfort and get you back to full health as soon as possible?

A variety of viruses are prevalent in my area, Chicago suburbs. I work part of my day in a senior living community and we have had a lot of people, both residents and staff, become ill. I have a head cold that started on Thursday morning. I dealt with it by maximizing the amount of sleep I got, drinking more green tea, having my homemade chicken veggie soup, and by taking zinc lozenges. My fitness center has a stream room so I also spent some time there each day as the warm, moist air was very soothing to my irritated sinuses.

Friday and Saturday were the worst as I was extremely fatigued. Yesterday I was feeling much better and hopefully the last of the congestion will depart this week.

We've had a good month of cold and flu-conducive weather that I've been out in a lot. Just last week, I sensed the onset of a cold. Historically (last 10+ years) I'd get at least one / season that would completely knock me out for about a week.

Last year and so far this year, that hasn't happened. At the earliest symptoms, I now pop a Zycam tablet about a once a day and that seems to keep things at bay. Recently, I've replaced the relatively expensive Zycam with a zinc supplement. I think it pretty much does the same thing at a fraction of the cost.

Just the other day, I wondered how much, if any effect, the weight loss had on this process. I tend to bounce back from stuff much quicker now than when I was fatter. I doubt it's a 'smoking gun' kind of signature but in the realm of cumulative effects, it's not out of the realm of imagination that it makes a positive difference.

The flu can cause weight loss for sure. No lack of fluids intake but fever for 3-4 days . Down about 3 lb after recovering and slowly gained about 2 lb back .On maintenance that was fine. I just try to eat my normal healthy diet best I can plus some chicken soup. Wasn't hungry but the opposite and had trouble eating much.

My problem is I tend to feed both. Seldom too sick to eat.
A quote, I believe, from "Sex in the City" "I'm one stomach bug away from goal".

Soup and fruit help me feel better in the long run.

The cookies I give into when sick probably don’t help.

Heard on News about how bad the flu is this year. Thankfully I have not been ill.

When I am sick I revert back to childhood favorites when sick.
    Orange soda (now Diet Sunkist)
    Chicken Noodle or Tomato soup
    With crackers

Knock on wood. I've managed to avoid all the colds and flu that seem to be so prevalent right now. Being retired helps because I control the number of people with whom I come into contact. I've become somewhat obsessive about using the wipes at grocery stores and anywhere else where I need to use a cart.

Like @Jimb376mfp, when I'm sick I revert back to my childhood as well -- Diet ginger ale, chicken noodle soup, and saltine crackers.

DW just got over the pneumonia and I just got over a head cold that lasted almost 3 weeks. Been extra rough in our area here in North Ga. nothing in the food area seem to help either of us.
