7 Days of Rain and No Treadmill/Gym

Hello everyone! I’m a newbie to this app (Dec ‘17) and group. I’ve been working on the ZenLabs C25k program since mid-December. It took me more than a month to get through the first two weeks of the program, but I’ve been comfortably progressing for a few weeks now. I did the Week 4, Day 2 workout yesterday and was shocked to realize that I did 2.5 miles in 36 minutes! I’m really loving how much better I feel already, as well as the results I’m seeing on the scale.

My problem is this: I run at a local park, on a gravel path. I’ve found it to be the best fit for me in terms of impact, terrain, and scenery/boredom prevention. But, starting tonight, my area’s forecast is for 80+% chances of heavy rain and thunderstorms for the next SEVEN DAYS. I don’t own a treadmill, nor do I have a gym membership. Earlier in my program, I “ran” laps around inside my tiny home. I’ve found that I can’t quite mimic the exertion of running outdoors, but I guess it’s better than nothing.

Any tips to keep up my motivation and at least not lose ground while I’m waiting for the weather to improve enough to get back on track?

That's a tough one! I have done runs in the rain as long as there is no lightning.

Maybe find a gym that will let you do a free trial, or allows guests?

Laps around your house is better than nothing. Taking a week off won't set you back too much.

    Keep moving!

A bit of rain won't do you any harm...

I don’t mind a “bit” of rain. Severe thunderstorms and flash floods are a different matter!

I managed to make it out before the rain started this morning. Week four is officially complete! Next week is still looking pretty iffy, but we’ll see.

Very nice! Way to go. You might find if you keep an eye on the hourly forecast or radar data you can find windows of time each day to get outside despite the rain in the forecast.

That's rough but I've run in the rain the last two workouts. Not downpours, mind you, but rain nonetheless. Is running on a street or sidewalk in the rain totally against what you want to do?

When I was living in FL during the Summer/storm season we had severe lightening storms nearly every single day... I made sure to do as you did and run before or after they started and ran relatively close to my house so that if it started looking sketchy I would be close by.

As you mentioned severe thunderstorms are NOT something to be taken lightly. Before living in FL I didn’t know what a “severe” thunderstorm was...and would have said something similar to the above poster (as I had only experienced regular thunderstorms)...now I know better, but until you live somewhere with that type of weather it’s really unimaginable!

Is there an indoor track anywhere near you! You can likely just pay a day fee there.

As pointed out above, it was the lightning that was causing the major problem with outdoor running, more than the rain. I managed to get Tuesday and Thursday’s runs in, though I had to run “laps” around my living room on Sunday (was out of town for a work function on Saturday, my usual weekend run day). Since that really doesn’t give the same pace or terrain as outdoor running, I’m going to repeat Week 5 this week. Wednesday is the only day that’s predicted to be stormy this week, so fingers crossed that I have a better week.

Here in the Deep South, we really only have two seasons: summer and thunderstorms/tornadoes. Apparently we’ve entered storm season early this year. But tomorrow is supposed to be 80 degrees and sunny; I guess I shouldn’t complain too much about that!

I actually tried a new treadmill at the gym today. I ran a mile and walked a mile. It was hard, but I didn't feel dizzy when I finished.
