Do you have to be in a calorie defect to Recomp? Or are you able to eat and maintenance, 40 30 30 macros and lift to see changes.

Recomp actually means not losing weight - so you are eating at maintenance, no deficit.
You'll find that many here start out with recomp because they are resetting, which means eating at maintenance.
If in calorie deficit - you may be ever so slowly gaining some muscle while losing fat - but mainly keeping what you got.2
