Hello all! You may have seen me say that the husband and I recently started an actual lifting program. I want to check our forms before progressing in weight, if anyone would be so kind as to offer their input! Any advice or suggestions are welcome! Thanks.

PS - Hopefully this embeds the videos properly.

  • Good for you both!!

I'm a beginner myself - so take my advice with a grain of salt. But I'll get the ball rolling. For squats, I think your husband needs to go a little deeper. My understanding is that you should *just* break parallel (your thighs with the ground). Also, I've heard that a Smith Machine is not a great choice for squatting - but if that's all you have access to..?

I'm not sure what a Russian deadlift is - but your husbands looks a bit more like a deadlift that I'm used to, with bent knees. I believe you need to keep the bar as close as possible to your legs as you lift - almost scraping your knees. So for me when I line up for a deadlift, I put my feet under the bar, and attempt to keep the bar over the middle of my foot for the entire lift. Again - the smith machine probably makes things different.

    No idea about Lat Pulldowns.
Great work and keep being awesome!

Thanks! A Romanian Deadlift is a different type of deadlift. You start with the bar at the top rather than the bottom; bar only goes slightly past knees not all the way to floor; knees not bent as much. I have heard from others that we need to be closer to the bar on the RDLs, which is difficult to do in a smith machine.

  • Oh cool! I used to do those with dumbbells. Maybe try that? I think I got up to 30 or 40 pounds (in each hand). I think dumbbells are underrated - you have to use a lot of extra muscle to keep everything stable
