Swimming and flexibility

I've noticed when I don't swim that lots of things go south (mood, fitness, tummy, ability to burn off cake, shoulder tension ... etc etc)
This latest year off, for the first time, I seem to have become a lot stiffer.
(Eg right leg no longer wants to be kneeling. )
I am not a specially flexible person - and I have a tendency to tight hamstrings etc (usual poor posture coming from being flat footed...). And I have been doing more walking so maybe everything has just tightened up from that. Or ?
I don't think of swimming as having much impact on flexibility. But does it?
A friend recently described her swimming as 'oiling the joints' and that made me think.
Or maybe the stiffness just yet another sign of growing decrepitude!? If I could find my glasses, I could re-join joga .... !
So does swimming make your body move better out of the water too?

Part of my warm up routine involves opening up my shoulders through front crawl and backstroke swimming, as well as opening up my hips with my breaststroke kick. I've had knee problems so stretching out my legs before I start a workout is key for me.0
