(OT) A pop culture diversion

Two things I've been meaning to share and/or open up for discussion:

(1) A Chef's Life on PBS. Absolutely in the vein of the great PBS shows that inform, entertain, and magically make one's blood pressure drop just by watching. Cindy @beachwoman2006, you should be into this if you're not already. The setting is eastern NC and the premise is exploring the south "one ingredient at a time" through the kitchen of series lead Vivian. There's a little more to the setup than that, but it's all explained over the opening credits. Good stuff. Vivian is so full of charm and really makes this a treat for foodies and non-foodies alike.

(2) This is Us on NBC. My daughter got me started watching this one, and we enjoy it together. We binge watched season 1 after it was highly recommended by my dad and sister (interesting trend, I realize now). Anyhow ... it's a TV drama and thus not the kind of thing I'd normally watch, but it's really well done - well written in particular - and has presented interesting studies of love, family, race, addiction, etc. I mention it here especially because of an ongoing story arc involving issues with weight and body image that included two of the main characters meeting in a WW-style support group. I've wondered off and on if any of you have seen the show and how you feel about how these issues are presented.

My guide says NBC. I think it's all still available On-Demand (at least with Comcast.

Thanks, Al. I went back and corrected. I *knew* that and still got it wrong. (Blaming the cold / cold meds once again!).

Oh, man. I'm working from home and, hmmmm, let's just say that's very tempting!

Oh trust me...I know all about Chef Vivian Howard LOL I've been watching it since it started. And one of the BEST birthday gifts I've ever gotten was a signed 1st edition copy of her cookbook, Deep Run Roots this year. Not only is it FULL of recipes (the thing is over 500 pages!), but it also has so many of HER stories of growing up in the South which parallel some of mine.

My son stood in line when she was in Greenville, SC to get me a copy because he knows how much I like her. It says, "Happy 70th Birthday, Cindy!" and is signed by her. My son said she was as down-to-earth in person as she is on the show -- maybe even moreso. She "liked his watch", stopped the book signing to ask about his watch and wanted him to show her all its features. LOL Don't ask ME about the watch because I haven't seen it yet. It's some kind of Android watch that synchs with his phone so that he can use it for texting, answering calls, surfing the web, etc.

And This Is Us? Can't say enough good about this show. I know I can always count on it to give me a good laugh and cry in each episode. If anyone hasn't watched it, now's the time to do some binge watching. It's on hiatus until the fall as of last night, but both seasons are available on NetFlix. I highly recommend that you watch it from the beginning. If you don't some of it won't make sense.

Oh and lest you think I'm kidding about how much I watch A Chef's Life:

"I'm Vivian and I'm a Chef. My husband Ben and I were working for some of the best restaurants in New York City when my parents offered to buy us a restaurant. But there was a catch. This restaurant had to be in Eastern North Carolina where I grew up and said I would NEVER return. Now here I am, living in the house I grew up in, raising twins, and exploring the South one ingredient at a time." LOL

Of course, they're no longer living in the house she grew up in. They have since built a beautiful house (that looks sort of like a spaceship) in Deep Run, NC next door to her parents.

In addition, they opened the Oyster Bar (a lower-scale restaurant than Chef and The Farmer) in Kinston, NC and have recently opened Benny's Big Time Pizzeria in Wilmington, NC.

    I had a hunch. :)

I know Kinston a bit from going to see Class A ballgames while on beach vacations. Vivian would have to be a pretty big fish in that pond.

I haven't figured out if past seasons are available anywhere. I can't remember how it was recommended to us, but we just started watching in the current season. Great stuff!

Found it on On-demand. TOL and I will check out season 1, Pilot. Anything I should watch for? Should we hold decision until further into season1?

Her restaurant has definitely put Kinston on the map :)

As far as watching previous seasons, I know previous seasons were On-Demand at some point but I'm not sure if all of them are still out there. You could always buy the DVD's of the previous seasons and make a contribution to PBS at the same time :)

Wow...it's been so long since I watched Season 1 I can't even remember most of it. You definitely need to see more than the pilot though.

I have been watching This is Us from day one. I got choked up on a regular basis and enjoyed the diverting plot lines for some unexpected twists.

One of my own interesting aspects of watching Kate has caused me to feel uncomfortable for me watching her struggle to come to her WLJ.

I think it pains me to realize how it identifies me to be obese and caused me and know only one person can change themselves, the only one can do it.

(BTW: One interesting behind the scenes surprising fact is that the actor Toby wears a “fat suit” that adds to several pounds and inches that adds to his stomach.)

VERY interesting! I saw him on a talk show a while back and my first thought was that he had lost a lot of weight. So I was surprised when this season started and he appeared to be the same size as the previous season.
