I've been doing low carb for 1.5 years, lost about 24lbs out of about 60 I could lose (started at 199). Slooooow loss, with lots of stops and restarts and a few carb binges along the way.
I have been losing the same 4lbs (177 to 174) for the last 6 months and have grown so frustrated and deflated. Even though I feel better, even though I have lost some weight, etc, I have been feeling so down about not losing more weight and inches. So last week I ate carbs. I tried to stay within normal calorie limits (1300ish) but quickly went insane: I was constantly hungry, eating, eating, eating, sugar, carbs, chips, crackers, cake, at night, during the day, etc- I was constantly "hungry" for more. At the end of the week I got on the scale and looked with one eye closed: up 4lbs... of course.
When will I learn? Even with no loss, I am in more in control of my eating with keto than I have ever been in my life. Even with no loss, I feel better about myself, less bloated, less hungry. My joint pain is gone. I just can't handle carbs. And even though I personally can't imagine life without ever having fruit and pastries and pies, etc, I can only have them once in a blue moon, when they're so good or the occassion is so special that I don't want to say no. I have to stop thinking that low carb is just another way to keep calories low because for me it's not; it's also the only way I can control binges.
Back at it for the last 2 days (under 30 carbs) and already feeling like a human again....

I can completely relate to this. Even if I never lost another pound with keto, I would stay low carb for all the other benefits. I've had a lifelong struggle with over eating, binging, food cravings etc... all of it vanished with low carb. My soreness and inflammation is gone. If I eat anything with sugar or grains in it now, I ache for DAYS... I've learned my lesson - so like you it would have to be *really* good or *really* special to feel worthwhile.
Don't worry about the water gain. Unless you ate 14,000 calories ABOVE what you burned, it's definitely just your body retaining water.
You might be pleasantly surprised with a nice loss this week and/or next. I've been struggling with the same few pounds for a while as well, and after 3 days off plan (and a 5 lb gain) my body let go of all the water weight PLUS two additional pounds by the next weigh in. It was like a reboot of sorts. (Some people work this in intentionally as it is a common plateau buster!)
Feel better, good luck, you can do it!2
