We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for April are:

Monday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Tuesday - myallforjcbill (Bill)
Wednesday - minimyzeme (Kim)
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - 88olds (George)

Today's Topic: Running late & its impact on your weight loss / maintenance

Does the sudden jolt of oversleeping throw your weight goals for a loop? Are there similar jolts from similar unexpected challenges you contend with? What is your process for correction, if needed?

Oversleeping? What is this concept that you speak of? Seriously, since I've hit my 50s I nearly always wake up around the same time no matter what time I go to bed. This also applies on vacations, weekends, etc.

However, having my schedule altered at the last minute will jolt me. I don't like surprises as I am a planner. Process for correction in times like that? Wish I had a consistent one. Sometimes I'm able to keep my perspective and go with the flow. Other times I end up using food to calm my jangled nerves.

I do not get up at the same time everyday. The nature of my business life does not dictate that I get up unless I have an early morning appointment. Often times I do have these appointments but never or almost never oversleep. What does jolt me is an unexpected phone call or email that can immediately interrupt my day and get me off track and that's where the jolt comes in. These interruptions play Havoc with my diet even if I've planned out a meal it can still get interrupted consequently I can often times run very late on a meal or eat too early causing havoc with my meal plans.

My plan to correct these issues is to keep snacks in my office and or in my car that are healthy but this is difficult however because health bars are either high in sugar high in carbohydrates or high in protein and not WW friendly. However I do the best I can and often times eat too much when the day is over at Meal Time. I work on this situation daily and weekly and I'm usually always seeking a fix to this problem.

I made a point of not running late. I had to have breakfast. Still do. In my 20s I didn’t eat breakfast and I was crazy by lunch.

I did have a work assignment that called for a lot of missed lunches for about a year. Got by on GenSoy? Bars I think they were called. Didn’t lose any weight missing meals. Go figure. Glad that ended.

Over sleeping no. But if I lose track of time before I eat and have to be somewhere by a certain time I will woof my food down and panic

Thanks gang, I know it was a kind of a lame question but I was in a rush that started with oversleeping--something that rarely happens. I'm more prone to undersleeping than over...

Anyway, while the jolt of having slept late (or like @imastar2 said, an unexpected but consequential phone call or email) can put me in a short-term tailspin, it rarely reaches deep enough to majorly derail my eating relatively healthy. I too keep a few things on-hand either for snacks or just having something on the go. I don't eat Quest bars often, but more than once they're been the bridge I need to at least get to a better place. Though it has sometimes proved dangerous, I also keep a stash of cashew in the car. If I count them as I eat them, I can usually get a good shot of protein--that too helps get me to a better place.

In general, from a weight management standpoint the unexpected events don't usually throw me too badly. They may mess up other parts of my schedule but I find adaptive management to be a helpful challenge from time to time. I wouldn't want to live my life with these things happening a lot, but once in a while I can usually handle without any impact on weight management.

I don’t think it’s a lame question at all. But I bet the answers would be a lot different with a younger crowd.

Like I said in my post, I recall those days and wonder how I functioned in the mornings.

Bottom line I think- mindfulness takes time.
