Living the Lifestyle - Tues May 8th

We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for May are:

Monday - Jimb376mfp (Jim)
Tuesday - Calvin2008Brian (Brian)
Wednesday - <if you start me up>
Thursday - <if you start me up I'll never stop>
Friday - Al_Howard (Al)

Today’s LTL topic: activity. What keeps you moving? Any goals / challenges / barriers?

Sorry for the late start. Busy morning.

    Activity.

I'm regrettably off of running for the foreseeable future while I work through the issues that were causing me so much back/butt pain the last time I tried a modest running program. I feel like the treatment is going well, but I need to be more earnest about my HEP and get some good stretching and strengthening going. To be completely honest, I'm kind of feeling a "hot stove" reaction to running and not feeling eager to get back to it (as I always have before).

The nice change in weather prompted me to get out on my bike both Sat and Sun. I haven't been on a regular workout schedule since the end of February, and I could feel the change in my fitness level. I'm looking forward to more outdoors days with increased activity.

Another recent note: I started tracking daily steps with the Samsung Health app. 6000 step goal, which I've met once since starting this last week. It's been fun, and challenging. I'm going to go get some steps in as soon as I'm done with this post.

On the horizon ... maybe ... I'm thinking about doing a 6 week session with a personal trainer beginning in late July. I'd like to get reasonably well healed on my own with PT guidance, and then take it to a next step with some guided strength training. We'll see.

    Pickleball
    Fishing
    Pilates
    Yoga
    Walking

I don’t really have goals aside from keeping up the program.

I went to PT for a sore lower back. She gave me even more stretches to do.

    Biking!!
    Hiking!!
    And recently swimming!

Running just hasn't come together consistently this year. I finally started making progress after a back issue at the start of the year, then tweaked my knee weeding my flower beds so right now I have that "hot stove" reaction to running that @Calvin2008Brian mentioned. I have two 25K trail events late this year (November & December) so hope that I'll be able to be running more consistently by that time. Otherwise they will just end up being fast hikes as both are in conjunction with 50K events so I have 7 hours to complete the 25K.

My original goal for 2018 was to ride 2,500 miles. Considering that I'm already at 1,500 miles, maybe I should revise that goal to 5,000 miles! I'm chasing some RUSA awards for 2018 including riding a 100K for 12 consecutive months (I'm at month 8 now) as well as a 200K for 12 consecutive months (month 4 just done). There are also cumulative kilometer awards as well as an explorer award for riding in 10 or more states (just got states 9 & 10 done last month).

My hiking of the Ice Age trail will resume at the end of this month.

So many activities, so little time!

I actually enjoy walking, but have balance problems, so don't tend to do it much outside, especially on uneven ground. Am hoping to try hiking piles soon.
Was doing treadmill at the gym until I hurt my shoulder, which curtailed that. Hope to start S-L-O-W-L-Y this week.
Started a Tai Chi class, which is aimed at balance, last week. Have had 3 classes, and am enjoying it.
FitBit is currently set to 6500 steps, but only hit that once since stopping the gym. Was just about set to up it to 7000, but....

Wonderful thing about this getting older stuff, makes you so aware of how easy it is to abuse, and thereby hurt our bodies.

LTL topic: activity. What keeps you moving?
Water aerobics, swimming laps and walking the dog. I have tried a few new things: Tai Chi, Chair Yoga and took one kayak lesson.

Any goals / challenges / barriers?

My goals for summer: try to hit a bucket of golf balls and rent a kayak in our park, very still quiet water.

My knee from Post arthroscopic surgery I didn’t do enough PT and now have messed up my right weak leg, balance and after three years I doubt I will ever run a forty yard dash. :frowning:

Barrier is my own challenge to do the PT. I am in control but need to do the work.

Habits go a long way to keep me moving. Walk with some buddies. Bike for errands and fun.
I try not to think of goals but did sign up for number of cycling days and I do have a standard in the back of my mind of 3000 miles annually.
