We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for May are:

Monday - Jimb376mfp (Jim)
Tuesday - Calvin2008Brian (Brian)
Wednesday - <your name here>
Thursday - <your name here too>
Friday - Al_Howard (Al)

Topic: side effects ... unintended, unexpected ... good/bad.

Weight loss is the primary one, but with it comes other changes. What have you experienced?

There are other changes, but the one that got me thinking this morning and prompted this topic is this: if I am on plan I do not experience heartburn, and it is such a blessing!

Off plan, I was routinely taking Zantac 2-3 times/week and chewing Tums in between. I would always seem to get heartburn, to varying degrees, in the late afternoon.

On plan, I can eat the same foods I felt were heartburn triggers (chiefly tomato sauce and peppers) and I do not get the symptoms. Portion size is the only changed variable.

Who da thunk it? If I overeat, my body will react in unpleasant ways, but if I eat a reasonable portion I'll feel better all over?

Not specific to weight loss, but removing the foods that I am intolerant of resolved my daily GI distress.

I'm sure there are some others but I need to dash off to a meeting.

My Dr Canceled my Rx for Type Two Diabetes. Now controlled by diet/exercise.

Awesome. Probably the best side effect of all!

    CPAP gone.
    Achy knees gone.
    Plantar fasciitis improvement.
    Self confidence up.
    Self nagging about weight silenced.
    Activity increased.
    Fun increased.

Can’t think of a downside. Unexpected? I thought weight loss would be the end of fun, it’s liberation.

Back when I was at goal, I had more energy, I was able to be more active and enjoyed it, my BP was lower (creeping up now), life seemed full of possibilities.

Fewer aches and pains when I'm eating like I should. Also better sleep.

I wish I could turn back the clock and tell my younger self to get sleep under control. Life changer.

My first side effect was a lowering of my triglycerides when I lost 50 LB. I have sorta high hereditary cholesterol so not so much there.

Surprisingly though since I have been eating my kale veggie omelet for about 18 months(?) for breakfast my cholesterol has dropped a pinch. More importantly my good cholesterol (HDL) has gone up and my ratio is now about 3.5 which is nice indeed.
Oh and I enjoy swimming more since I can appear in public in a swim suit now.
Oh and I can climb hills on my bike better all things considered.
