We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for May are:

Monday - Jimb376mfp (Jim)
Tuesday - Calvin2008Brian (Brian)
Wednesday - <open - jump in!>
Thursday - <open - don't be shy!>
Friday - Al_Howard (Al)

Topic: how often do you weigh yourself, and what are your thoughts on daily vs weekly vs ???.

I weigh daily, normally twice a day, especially when I am working the plan; not so much when I am "vacationing". This gives me a daily journal to look at trends, and also offers some predictability for the future. With amazingly high correlation, I lose two pounds overnight from my weigh-in right before bed to my morning weigh-in.

I'm a daily weigher, but weekly logger. I really need to remind myself not to attach too much importance to daily swings. How's that go again ... "the trend is your friend," right?

Both of us weigh daily, have done so for years. Don't really know if it helps, but I figure it can't hurt.

Now on maintenance, I weigh daily. Through experience (and GOAD) I've learned not to get too excited about any one weigh-in--up or down. What I'm more interested in is the trend. While it's easy to sometimes blame water/salt for being up or a few days of relatively clean eating and exercise for being down, I find the average tracks pretty well with my eating habits over several days. As I think Charlie used to say, I always get the weight I deserve, but maybe not when I think I deserve it.

When I was in the losing mode, I only weighed weekly--at my WW meeting. After having gone to the meetings for a short time, I noticed a lot of people would get pretty upset if they gained. I figured I might be prone to the same thing. So again, after reading GOAD, I opted to focus on how I related to food: what triggered me to overeat (or drink), to be more mindful of when I was slipping into that mode and to follow it through to intentionally change my auto-responses to stuff my face.

I see the number from the scale as useful but not be-all, end-all. Several of the ladies in my WW group suggest taking measurements too. They have found that the number on the scale may not change but it's not uncommon for the weight to be more favorably redistributed on their body. For myself, I also think the more I obsess on the scale, the harder the process becomes. I really try to live the 'persistence not perfection' thing. I figure staying on plan 90% of the time has gotten and will get me a lot further than the 0% of the time I used be...

Several times per week. I suppose I’d weigh every day if I remembered to do it.

Every day especially on maintenance. I do look at average weight for trends.

Twice a day Before Bed and on waking up. In My birthday suit, (lol) Its always a consistent 1.5 - 2 lbs difference between evening and morning so I pretty much know what I am going to see each morning, but its a habit that I have held on to for 11 years now.

Officially my WW WI had been Thursday forever. I check in pool locker room scale in skivvies just to see my lowest weight a few days a week.

My WI with clothes keeps me reminding me to stay BELOW GW. I know how the scale can change and without knowing see the number can be a change.
