Living the Lifestyle - Tues 6/5/18

We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.
This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!
Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for June are:
Monday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Tuesday - calvin2008brian (Brian)
Wednesday - minimyzeme (Kim)
Thursday -88olds (George)
Friday - Al_Howard
Today's Topic: meal delivery services.
We're talking about Door Dash, Bite Squad, Uber Eats, Foodsby, et al. Third-party restaurant meal delivery services are huge, and forecasted to become even more popular. You can read about it here: https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/third-party-food-delivery-market-poised-for-explosive-growth-300606417.html
What is your experience with these services? If you use them how do you make this ultimate convenience fit in with the lifestyle?

At this point in my life, I really have no use for any of them. Heck, I call into the local pizza joint, and go out to pick it up.
However, in a few more years, it would be an alternative to going out to a restaurant for a meal that I didn't have to cook.0 -
I have never tried them and don't see the need for them.0

No experience with them for us. We live in an area that makes grabbing take-out pretty easy. Plus I have a lot of food allergies, so tend to stick with the same two-three places where I know what's safe for me.
I think the big thing with fitting these services into a WW lifestyle is to avoid the temptation of adding on the extra "treat" to justify the delivery cost. I have no trouble not ordering dessert when we pick-up, but I can see folks slipping into a mindset of getting more food delivered for a flat fee. (I assume they're flat fee versus percentage.)
Overall, I think they're a good thing for busy lives. But I'd love to see the world slow down/get a little simpler and have people learn how easy (and enjoyable) it is to prepare simple meals at home. For me cooking is how some people describe exercise. I don't always feel like doing it, but I'm always glad/feel good after I've done it.0 -
Emmie @whathapnd - you nailed it.
I like to order Indian at home once in a while. The place I order from is terrific, and I get a large portion of whatever entree I choose that also comes with basmati and naan. Even though I'm already getting enough for three meals, it is so very tempting to add on samosas as an appetizer (because they're awesome and because, as you pointed out, the delivery fee is a fixed sum).
I use a delivery service several times each week at the office. I enjoy the convenience and variety, especially because we're not in an area where we can walk to more than one little cafeteria. The delivery service (Foodsby) always has healthy options, including a mix of smaller, local restaurants specializing in locally sourced, organic, etc.
I find the lifestyle thinking with delivery similar to dining out, but not exactly. One plus is that I never have to ask the server for a takeout package. One negative is the cost, but I look at it as paying for the convenience more so than paying for the meal.0 -
I haven't considered this as an option but frankly have only looked at a couple of the mail in offers and they seemed to be pricey to me for the convience. I haven't really explored these options but might one day. I still enjoy either going out or fixing at home with DW. Might be an option one day who knows.

Never tried them. Never had the desire to. Probably has a lot to do with being a picky eater who has food intolerances. It really isn't that much work to fix up something simple to eat. And since I do cooking in bulk, there is usually something in the freezer that I can heat up on short notice.0

Very little experience with it here either--unless you count the guy years ago who brought the right sub sandwich out to the house (about seven miles out of town) after we discovered after we got home with our order that they'd screwed up. That was handy but we'd already made the trip once so it seemed fair.
When I've been in a town that has the service (not third-party but affiliated with the restaurant) I've used it occasionally as a convenience but I don't think it's something I'd make a practice of. Who knows though--stranger things have happened.0
