We meet here to explore, share, celebrate, and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don’t) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. “ It’s a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for June are:

Monday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Tuesday - calvin2008brian (Brian)
Wednesday - minimyzeme (Kim)
Thursday -88olds (George)
Friday - Al_Howard

Today's Topic: what's cooking?
  • Do you look for new foods or new recipes for your home cooking?
  • Where do you find inspiration - cook books, websites, other?
  • Do you have favorite, go-to, low-point recipes in your rotation?

This is the time of the year when I rely on my easy to make recipes that allow me to cook in bulk and divide up and freeze. I'm absolutely swamped at work and will be for the next 9 weeks. Probably at the end of the summer semester I will either look for some new recipes or pull out those recipes that require more time to prepare.

I am a nut case for new recipes. I subscribe to three magazines, get daily recipes on my phone from Taste of Home, and get cookbooks on approval regularly. I envy those people that can open the pantry and refrigerator and pull a meal together by instinct, but, for me, I need those step by step instructions.

When the girls are in sports season, I look for the 30 minute and under meals. I have a Mongolian Beef recipe we all like, plus a stir fry with beef, tomatoes, zucchini, and low fat Italian dressing. It's crazy here, because I have one that does not like meat, one that tolerates no spice at all, one that won't eat "sweet and sour" like pineapple curry, and me, who is the only one in the household that enjoys sea food. So I am forever looking for meals that all four of us will eat, and, when I do find them, they go in a special file for repeat use.

I'm a frequent user of allrecipes.com, and I tend to keep paper copies of recipes I make and enjoy from there. At some point I scanned the whole mess and organized as one big pdf, but I still find myself going back to the paper copies more often than not.

I also like skinnytaste.com for WW friendly recipes.

True story: I've not made a true WW recipe for 10+ years after trying a point-friendly French toast recipe and having it turn out a soggy mess. Lol.

I just confirmed that links to the old GoaDie cookbooks are still posted at http://goadies.org. Pretty cool. I have used some of those recipes and need to give it that collection a second look.

TOL and I are creatures of habit. But..I like to see other things, and often slide a new recipe in every so often. TOL HATES spices, even black pepper, so am limited there (thank God for hot sauce).
Go to low points? A veggi version of the WW Chili Mac with canned beans (usually 2 cans) instead of meat. 5SPs for 2 oz. of pasta per person.

We're pretty much creatures of habit here too. I'm certainly not opposed to new foods and enjoy trying them when our paths cross, but for the most part, we stick with what we've done, adjusted seasonally.

I think more inspiration would be a good thing. Ironically enough, a lot of the WW recipes we've tried have been very good. Skinny Taste online has been another source of good-flavored and relatively low-point recipes too.

No particular faves on go-to, low-point recipes, but Skinny Taste does have a lot to offer in that regard.
